Russia and North Asia’s Resources and Environmental Issues

Littering What does it mean to litter? What can a community or good citizen do about littering? Do you think as a U.S. citizen that we can voice to our government that we are not happy with the littering and pollution happening in our community?

Russia What type of government do you think exist in Russia? Federation – –C–Constitution –B–Branches - There is no vice president, and the legislative branch is far weaker than the executive. –T–The president nominates the highest state officials, including the prime minister, who must be approved by the Duma. –T–The president can pass decrees without consent from the Duma. –H–He also is head of the armed forces and of the Security Council. Limited or Unlimited?

Economies and Resources of Russia What resources did you discover during the mapping activity are located in Russia? How can these resources effect the economy of Russia? What would happen if the people used up all of the resources in an area?

Renewable vs. Non-Renewable What are renewable and non-renewable resources? What are some examples: –Renewable- fish, lumber, soil –Non-renewable- oil, fossil fuels, minerals Which of these, renewable or non- renewable, does it seem that Russia primarily has?

Cont. Whose job is it to make sure the resources are not used up and the environment is protected? –G–Government –P–People Would it matter if the country had either an unlimited or limited government? Why?

Pollution in Russia As the world gets richer, environment gets poorer. With technological advancement, there is degradation in the environment. Russia, China, U.S. and India stand as the biggest polluters on earth. the environment “With technological advancement, there is degradation in the environment.”the environment –What do you think this statement means?

Chernobyl The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). It is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history and the only level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale. It resulted in a severe release of radioactivity following a massive power excursion that destroyed the reactor. nuclear reactoraccident Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant UkraineSoviet Unionnuclear powerInternational Nuclear Event Scalepower excursion

What happened? A nuclear reactor exploded and killed two people immediately. Thousands of other died due to radiation poisoning called “nuclear fallout”. It was 400x more radioactive fallout than the nuke dropped on Hiroshima during WWII. The cities around the facility were abandoned and still are to this day.

Pripyat: City abandoned. Nuclear Facility in the Back.

Pripyat School Abandoned

Abandoned Port of Chernobyl in June 2000 Chernobyl was also home to an active port in the years before the meltdown. Many contaminated boats and barges still lie rusting in its waters, which have been off- limits since the disaster. (Credit: Getty Images)

Abandoned Nursery On the day of the disaster, children oblivious to the nuclear accident played in this Pripyat kindergarten, where dolls and toys still scattered on the floor are testament to their hasty departure.

Chernobyl Workers Measure Their Radiation Levels in April 2006 Several thousand people are still employed at the Chernobyl plant for radioactive waste management, decontamination and other activities. They work in shifts to minimize their exposure. (Credit: AFP/Getty Images)

Mutation? Types of Mutations: Physical Mutations Immune System Deficiencies Cancers Heart Problems Issues due not always only effect those in direct contact, effects could be passed along to offspring The list could go on and on

Soil Pollution Russia An area of Karabache, Russia, where soil has been poisoned by high concentrations of lead, arsenic, nickel, cobalt, and cadmium. Soil Pollution - water, effects, environmental, pollutants, United States, EPA, pesticide, chemicals, industrial, toxic, sources, use, life, Phytoremediation http://www.pollutionissues.com/Re-Sy/Soil- Pollution.html#ixzz0eU9LIemGSoil Pollution - water, effects, environmental, pollutants, United States, EPA, pesticide, chemicals, industrial, toxic, sources, use, life, Phytoremediationhttp://www.pollutionissues.com/Re-Sy/Soil- Pollution.html#ixzz0eU9LIemG

Water Pollution in Russia KIEV, Ukraine -- Russia and Ukraine will clash anew very soon, this time on issues of environmental protection. Kiev intends to demand from Moscow the compensation of billion dollars for polluting the Kerch Strait by petroleum.

Sources of Water Pollution in Russia

Air Pollution in Russia

Air Pollution Factories are putting toxins in the air everyday!

World Pollution Map Think anyone else has a problem?

USA Too? United States, India, Russia, and China are the top four producers of pollution. What are your thoughts on that?

Why? Why do people and countries pollute? Is it legal to liter in Texas? Have you or have you seen someone close to you liter? Who is responsible for cleaning up liter? Do you think Russia can voice their opinion about littering? \\cmswinserver\CMS Shared\Teachers\World Cultures\Turning_the_Tide_Against_Pollution.asf\\cmswinserver\CMS Shared\Teachers\World Cultures\Turning_the_Tide_Against_Pollution.asf

Restrictions and Fines!

New Alternatives?

What do we do now? or OUR CHOICE!

Final Thoughts Write 2-3 sentences on your final thoughts of this lesson, How can it apply to your life?
