Tactics and Technology Old tactics utilized lines, single-shot weapons, and open fields New technology of the war included airplanes, airships, gas, and machine guns –Trenches dug in fields to avoid enemy Area between trenches called “No-Man’s Land” –Life in trenches brings on new challenges Shellshock PTSD New tactics never formally developed during the conflict Hey Kos, why not draw a diagram of trenches?

New Technology Airplanes – Initially observation but evolve into weapons Airships – Large and scary bombers but slow Machine guns/repeating guns – Gives individual soldiers chance to kill multiple enemies Gas Warfare – Takes out a large group of soldiers at one time Submarines – Undetectable before radar, temporarily outlawed –Germany declared “unrestricted submarine warfare” –Any enemy ship will be sunk

The Zimmerman Telegram and the Lusitania – America Checks In America initially neutral Lusitania was a British ship carrying American civilians Sunk by a German submarine (U-Boat) To keep America out, Germany contacts Mexico Tells them if they invade U.S. Germany will eventually help them retake land America intercepts telegram 1917 – The United States declared war on Germany

The Russian Revolution – Russia Check Out Similar to French Revolution –Rich royal family abusing lower and working classes 1917 – Bolsheviks overthrow Czar Nicholas II Russia can’t fight Great War and Civil War at the same time Vladimir Lenin rises to power
