DO NOW Understanding Weather
2
Assuming the amount of water vapor in the air stays the same 1. What is relative humidity? 2. What happens to relative humidity if the temperature increases? 3. What happens to relative humidity if the temperature decreases?
3
Assuming the amount of water vapor in the air stays the same 1. Relative humidity is the amount of moisture in the air compared to the amount of moisture the air can hold at that temperature. 2. What happens to relative humidity if the temperature increases? – decreases 3. What happens to relative humidity if the temperature decreases? – increases
4
Dew Point What is Dew Point? When is air saturated? What happens if the temperature of the air is the same as the dew point? (remember the LAB!)
5
Dew Point What is Dew Point? – the temperature at which a gas condenses to a liquid (or water vapor becomes water) When is air saturated? – air is saturated when it has a relative humidity of 100% which means dew point has been reached What happens if the temperature of the air is the same as the dew point? (remember the LAB!) – water vapor will condense and form a liquid, or dew! – in the atmosphere water vapor will condense on a dust particle and become a cloud
6
Air Masses Continental means wet or dry? Maritime means wet or dry? Polar means warm or cold? Tropical means warm or cold? What is the boundary between air masses called?
7
Air Masses Continental means wet or dry? – dry Maritime means wet or dry? – wet Polar means warm or cold? – cold Tropical means warm or cold? – warm What is the boundary between air masses called? A front
8
What is a cloud made of?
9
Water droplets condensed on dust particles in the air
10
A. B. C.D.A.. 1. Which symbol belongs to which front? 2. What color is each front symbol? 3. What type of weather does each front bring? Check your Fronts Chart for answers to the weather each front brings.

A. B. C. Warm front A.. 1. Which symbol belongs to which front? 2. What color is each front symbol? 3. What type of weather does each front bring? Check your Fronts Chart Study Guide for answers to the weather each front brings. Occluded front Cold front Stationary front

Be able to answer the following: 1. If you see these clouds in the sky what do they look like and what weather can you expect? – Cumulus – Cumulonimbus – Cirrus – Stratus
13
Be able to answer the following: 1. If you see these clouds in the sky what weather can you expect? – Cumulus – white puffy; fair weather – Cumulonimbus – thunderhead – thunderstorm w possible hail which forms in cold front – Cirrus – ice crystals; rain in 24 – 48 hrs. – Stratus- flat layered that form in a warm front and bring gentle steady rain
14
Air Masses A. B. C. D. E. F. G. What is the origin of each of the 3 mT air masses?
15
Air Masses A. mP B. cP and/or cA C. mP D. cT E. mT F. mT G. What is the origin of each of the 3 mT air masses? Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic
16
Cold Air Masses What kind of weather does a cP air mass bring in the summer? What kind of weather does a cP air mass bring in the winter? What kind of weather does an mP air mass bring in the summer? What kind of weather does a mP air mass bring in the winter?
17
Cold Air Masses What kind of weather does a cP air mass bring in the summer? Cool, dry What kind of weather does a cP air mass bring in the winter? Extremely cold winter weather What kind of weather does an mP air mass bring in the summer? Cool, foggy What kind of weather does a mP air mass bring in the winter? rain and snow in Pacific region; cool, cloudy w. rain or snow in Atlantic area
18
Warm Air Masses What kind of weather does a cT air mass bring in the summer? What kind of weather does a cT air mass bring in the winter? What kind of weather does a mT air mass bring in the summer? What kind of weather does a mT air mass bring in the winter?
19
Warm Air Masses What kind of weather does a cT air mass bring in the summer? clear, dry, hot What kind of weather does a cT air mass bring in the winter? Warm and dry What kind of weather does a mT air mass bring in the summer? Hot, humid, with possible hurricanes and thunderstorms What kind of weather does a mT air mass bring in the winter? Mild, often cloudy

Think about it… Would a farmer prefer the rain from a warm front or a cold front to come through his area during the growing season? Explain why..
21
Think About It Suppose you are planning an outdoor activity for tomorrow afternoon. You hear on the weather that a front is coming through tonight. With the understanding that you want to be outside tomorrow, which of the 4 fronts we learned about would you rather have come through? Fully explain why.
