Hunting and Firearm Safety Estimated the 2/3 of gun casualties are caused by persons under the age of 21 –In many states, hunter’s education is required before a person is able to purchase a license, ammunition or a firearm. Be knowledgeable of correct/safe use of a firearm and obey public safety laws Can anyone think of general points in gun safety? Always keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction Guns should be unloaded when not in use Don’t rely on gun’s “safety” feature Treat a gun as if it can fire at any time Be sure of target and what’s beyond it Use correct ammunition Always wear eye and ear protection Be sure barrel is clear of obstruction before shooting Do not alter or modify your gun, but do have it serviced regularly Be aware of mechanical and handling techniques of specific firearms Follow Hunter’s code of Ethics Wear Hunter Orange or fluorescent colors while hunting Avoid alcohol and drugs anytime, but especially when handling firearms!
