What makes a good poster? CDT Research Skills Session Week 10, HT, 1 st Year

What is the purpose of the poster? A poster provides a concise and effective medium to communicate your ideas and thoughts provided it is designed well. Ask yourselves upfront: Who is the audience? – Scientists, specialists, peers, lay audience or combinations thereof What is the purpose of the poster? – Tell people about your research – Educate – Encourage others to read your Proceedings paper

What is the purpose of the poster? What is the forum for the presentation? – Conference poster session – Wall-mounted standalone poster – (Increasingly) Electronic poster session How long do you expect someone to look at the poster? – 30 seconds – 1-3 minutes – 5-10 minutes – All of the above......

What makes a good poster? Make it visually interesting and memorable Have ONE simple take-home message A good layout is key Keep words to a minimum (say 20-25% text) – it is not just a re-digest of a paper Use images/tables/figures to illustrate your message Do not make it too busy While designing it, practice talking using it (many people do not before a conference)

What makes a good poster? Finally, don’t forget the main purposes of a poster which are: 1.To provide a visual aid when you are discussing your work with others 2. To have a long term effect on both the listener and others who may view your poster.
