3
Key points Courses build on and develop skills, knowledge and understanding progressively up through levels Courses have a hierarchical Unit structure that provides a smooth progression from National 3 to National 5 – Chemical Changes and Structure/ Nature’s Chemistry / Chemistry in Society – Nat 5 progresses to the Higher which progress to Advanced Higher
4
Key points There are two Unit Outcomes at all levels and are common across the levels If a Unit is being done as part of a Course, there are opportunities for transfer of evidence across the Units Differentiation between levels is found in the Assessment Standards and the Evidence Requirements
5
UASPs Package 1 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment activities for each Unit Package 2 Combined approach- assessment of all Units, Outcomes & Assessment Standards Package 3 Portfolio approach – naturally occurring evidence
6
Added Value assessment Each Course at National 4 – Advanced Higher includes assessment of Added Value For National 4, the added value is in an Added Value Unit. Not graded For National 5 & above, the added value is in the Course Assessment – Question paper plus Assignment/Project. Graded A-D (as at present)
7
National 4 – Added Value Unit Chemistry Assignment Stage 1 Research Stage Candidates should be given the candidate Instructions Candidates may have access to a wide range of resources. must be conducted under some supervision and control. Suitable evidence for this Assignment could be found in a learner log or journal.
8
National 4 – Added Value Unit Chemistry Stage 2- Communication stage, candidates should have access to the material they have generated in Stage 1: the Research stage and a data book. must be carried out under centre supervision. Suitable evidence for Stage 2- Communication, for this Assignment could be found in one or more of the following: a report a presentation, with supplementary/supporting material such as PowerPoint slides with notes a conference/annotated/information poster an information leaflet
9
National 5 – Chemistry Question Paper Assesses ability to retain and integrate knowledge and understanding from across the Course content Equal weighting and sampling across all three Units Structure similar to existing Intermediate Courses 80 Marks (80% of Total Marks) Open question No half marks No assessment of prior knowledge
10
Update Nat 3 - 5 Course & Unit Support Notes have been updated in line with other documents and include learner exemplification, Assignment Resource packs and suggested investigations. Unit Assessment Support Packs have been updated for clarity and consistency, in line with feedback eg Assessment Standard 2.4: candidates must demonstrate all of the problem-solving skills. At least one correct response for each problem-solving type is required.
11
Update National 5 Minor changes to Mandatory content Assignment. There are no prescribed topics. The marking instructions and conditions of assessment which must be followed can be found in the specific subject General Assignment and Assignment Assessment Task information
12
Update Higher Minor changes to Mandatory content Assignment marks changed from 30 to 20
