Research Poster A Web based lesson by Ellen Fasenfest a teacher with 15 years of experience at Etna Elementary. Lesson is located at http://ctap295.ctaponline.org/~efasenfe

Expectations Learn web page design Evaluate web sites Learn data base and graphs Learn to develop a power point presentation

What I Learned How to design a web page How to use a data base and make graphs How to evaluate web sites for use in the classroom How to make a power point presentation

Successes Web page used by students Power point presentation Challenges Finding the ‘perfect’ web site for my lesson Remembering all of the procedures for all of the components that needed to be included in web design

Reflections Internet lessons are motivating for the students Learning something new, such as, web page design helped me be more understanding of what students go through when learning something difficult

Using the Website Students access the link http://versaware.animalszone.lycos.com/

Taking Notes Students read about their animal and write six facts about it in complete sentences.

Designing a Poster Students write their facts around the outside edge of the paper as a frame for the picture and title.

Assessment 1. Students take the pre test before doing any research on their animal. 2. Students will make a poster reporting the facts they have learned about their animal. 3. Students will take the post test.

Implementation Hints Allow the students a session to explore the website before they choose their animal to study. Print out the information from the computer because it is easier to read on paper. Encourage class sharing as this enhances the learning.

Effectiveness 1.Students were very motivated to do research on the Internet. 2.Lots of sharing went on as the students learned about their animal. 3. Students learned much more than they required to know for their final project. 4. The reading level was above a third grade level so some of the students needed assistance with the reading.

Student Performance This graph shows that students did not know much about their animal before they did the research. After completing the research they remembered many facts.

Summary and Observations 1.Using the Internet to do research about an animal was very motivating for the students. 2.Most students said they would like to use the web site again. 3.Having the web site bookmarked before the students come to the lab saves valuable time. 4.Developing a lesson based on a standard is a good way to go because you know what your expectations are.
