A new public health role for Local Authorities

Health and Social Care Act 2012 From 1 April, local authorities have a new responsibility to improve the health and well- being of their local population

New PH responsibilities Appoint a Director of Public Health Oversee a local PH ring fenced grant Work with partners to improve health – Health and Wellbeing Boards Produce Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (monitor health needs of the local population) Commission services to promote health and wellbeing

Public health services Comprehensive sexual health services (sexually transmitted infections, contraception, sexual health promotion and disease prevention) Childhood measurement programme NHS Health Checks programme Public Health core offer to the NHS Ensure local health protection plans are effective (screening, imms/vaccination, outbreaks of communicable disease & emergency planning)
