Warm Up.. Bring your notebook, pencil, agenda, colored pencils and headphones to your desk Complete Wednesday’s warm up and your worksheet from yesterday! Go quietly to get your chromebook and continue working! Videos with questions: BrainPop and Discovery Education YOU ARE QUIET, WORKING WHEN THE BELL RINGS
3
Agenda Kahoot Review - Vocabulary 6.P.1.2
Chromebooks…..follow along and take notes then complete: Prism / Visible Light handout Any remaining time: Finish videos with Questions on Discovery Education and BrainPop
4
Kahoot….. I will dismiss you by rows
Login and in a search box type kahoot it Select the website and wait for pin to join game! Candy for top 5 in each block!!
5
Teacher wiki page! Select the powerpoint for today – October 28 2015
You will follow along and take notes as we discuss Light today in class
6
Write in notebook Light is a form of energy emitted by the Sun
Light travels through electromagnetic waves; (can travel through a vacuum - empty space) Enables sunlight to reach us on Earth!
7
Write in notebook Artificial light is produced by objects on earth.
Examples: flashlight, classroom lights, a candle, computer screen.
8
Write in notebook Something can be “seen” when light waves are reflected into our eyes.
9
How do we see different colors?
We will watch this video to explain this Brain Pop video “Color”
10
Write in notebook Human eyes only respond to “visible light wavelengths” within the electromagnetic spectrum
11
Visible Light Spectrum– “ROY G BIV”
Write in notebook Visible Light Spectrum– “ROY G BIV” R-red O-orange Y-yellow G-green B-blue I-indigo V-violet
12
Visible light travels in transverse waves.
Write in notebook Visible light travels in transverse waves. Color red has longest wavelength Color violet has shortest wavelength ROY G BIV = in this order wavelength is decreasing
13
Handout… You will receive your handout back from yesterday
We will now complete the prism side You will need colored pencils or crayons to complete this activity Follow along as we complete this together
15
Reflected Light: Introduction Video
Discovery Ed video “ Reflected Light” (1:08 minutes) 9B D7970E0D780C
16
Reflected Light Write these notes! Light can be absorbed or reflected.
Absorbed light = the colors we do not see Reflected light = the colors we see
17
Reflected Light - Notes
Write these notes! Reflected Light - Notes White light = contains all the colors (ROYGBIV) White light shining on an apple: The red light bounces off the apple and enters our eyes while all the other colors are absorbed
18
Green Shamrock (green is reflected)
Reflected Light Green Shamrock (green is reflected) Yellow Banana (yellow is reflected) Orange Pumpkins (orange is reflected)
19
Reflected Light - Notes
Write these notes! Reflected Light - Notes White objects reflect all the colors (ROYGBIV) This is why we wear light colored clothes in the summer because more colors are reflected and we feel cooler Black light reflects no color, it absorbs all the colors of light This is why when we wear dark clothing in the summer, we feel hotter (it is absorbing more of the colors)
20
Now it’s your turn…. Pick five items in the classroom and for each item list what color is being reflected and what colors are being absorbed.
21
Ms. Maas’ Five! 1. Black Lab Table Tops = it is absorbing all colors (ROYGBIV) and reflecting black (we see) 2. Yellow Textbooks = reflecting yellow (we see) and absorbing ROGBIV 3. Blue Chairs = reflecting blue (we see) and absorbing ROYGIV 4. Green Plant = reflecting green (we see) and absorbing ROYBIV 5. American Flag Red Stripes = reflecting red (we see) and absorbing OYGBIV
22
Light Behaves Differently
Write these notes! Some materials scatter light; others allow light rays to pass through but refract (bend) the light.
23
Demonstration… Look at this pencil
Now look at this pencil in a glass – Draw this in your notebook now Write this question and answer in notebook: What is the medium the light is traveling through? Air
24
Demonstration… Now look at this pencil in a glass with water –
Draw this in your notebook now Write this question and answer in your notebook: What are the mediums the light is traveling through (hint there are 2 mediums)? Air and water Why does the pencil appear bent or broken? Write your definition for refracted light again…..
26
Refracted Light - Notes
Write these notes! Refracted Light - Notes Water refracts the light! Light travels slower through water than it does through air
