NEPTUNE Charlie Lynn 9B-08 Andy Cratton 9B-02

2 Neptune’s location in the Solar System
Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. Neptune’s distance from the sun is 4,504,000,000 Km.

3 Neptune: Description The fourth largest (by size) of the nine planets. Neptune is smaller in size but it's heavier than Uranus. If Neptune were hollow, it could hold almost 60 Earths. Neptune is blue. A big reason it is blue is because it is a gas planet. Neptune is also an outer planet. Neptune has 8 known moons; 7 small ones and a large moon called "Triton."

4 Neptune’s days and years
The length of Neptune's orbital year is 169 Earth years. The length of a Neptune day is exactly 16 hours and 7 minutes using Earth time.

5 Neptune’s gravity compared to Earth
The gravity on Neptune is only 1.19 times of the gravity on Earth. This is because it is such a large planet (and the gravitational force a planet exerts upon an object at the planet's surface is proportional to its mass and to the inverse of its radius squared). A 100-pound person would weigh 119 pounds on Neptune.

6 Neptune’s atmosphere The reason for Neptune’s blue atmosphere is because it is made up of hydrogen, methane, and helium. Neptune has rapid winds trapped in "bands" of latitude and large storms. Neptune's winds are the fastest in the solar system, reaching 2000 km/hour! Neptune’s average temperature is -220 degrees Celsius.

7 Exploration of Neptune
Neptune has been explored more than once. It has been explored by Voyager and Voyager two. At the time of Voyager's flyby, Neptune's most outstanding feature was the "Great Dark Spot" in the southern hemisphere. It was about half the size as Jupiter's "Great Red Spot" - about 1 Earth would fit into it. Neptune's winds blew the Great Dark Spot westward at 300 meters/second (700 mph)! Voyager 2 also saw a smaller dark spot in the southern hemisphere and a small irregular white cloud that zipped around Neptune every 16 hours or so now. This feature is known as "The Scooter." It was discovered on September 23, 1846 by Gotfried Galle.

8 Greek Mythology Poseidon is one of six siblings who eventually "divided the power of the world." His brothers and sisters include: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Zeus. The division of the universe involved him and his brothers, Zeus and Hades. Poseidon became ruler of the sea, Zeus ruled the sky, and Hades got the underworld. The other divinities attributed to Poseidon involve the god of earthquakes and the god of horses. The symbols associated with Poseidon include: dolphins, tridents, and three-pronged fish spears.
