1 Flutes

2 The Flute Family The flute belongs to the woodwind family.
The flute is one of the oldest instruments and has been found on every continent on Earth. All flutes were originally made of wood or bone. Today’s modern flutes are mostly made of metal; including nickel, silver, gold, and platinum.

3 Contrabass Flute The lowest playing member of the flutes is the contrabass flute. To play this flute a musician must stand or sit on a tall stool. Some contrabasses are as tall as seven feet.

4 Bass Flute The bass flute is also a low sounding instrument.
It’s size is double the standard concert flute. The curve on the end allows the player to reach the keys more easily.

5 Alto Flute The alto flute is also pitched lower than the standard flute. This flute can have a curved headjoint or a straight one. These flutes are commonly used in flute choirs and sometimes concert band.

6 C Flute This is the most common flute in the flute family.
You see this flute in many band and orchestra settings, as well as solo performances.

7 Piccolo The piccolo is the highest pitched instrument in the band or orchestra. The piccolo looks like a flute, but is missing some keys and is played a little differently.

8 How Does A Flute Work Have you ever made a sound by blowing over a soda bottle? This is how you make a sound on the flute. Place the edge of the lip plate where your chin meets your lip and blow across the tone hole. To change notes, you push different combinations of keys and change the direction of the air.
