6 How to Cite Another Person: Quoting Another Source Short Quotations To indicate short quotations (under 5 lines for prose or three lines of verse) in your text, enclose the quotation within double quotation marks. 9 Adding or Omitting Words In Quotations If you add a word or words in a quotation, you should put brackets around the words to indicate that they are not part of the original text. 10 If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipsis marks, which are three periods (... ) preceded and followed by a space. 12 In-text Citations for Print Sources with No Known Author When a source has no known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author name. 14 For a source with more than three authors, use the work's bibliographic information as a guide for your citation. Provide the first author's last name followed by et al. or list all the last names. 15 Citing Non-Print or Sources from the Internet When creating in-text citations for electronic, film, or Internet sources, remember that your citation must reference the source in your Works Cited. 16 Include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name). 18 Works Cited Page This is the page that let’s the reader know where you found your sources. It is the very last page of your essay. The works cited page is on a separate page from your essay and stapled at the end. 22 MLA Works Cited: Electronic Sources Web sites are different that books or magazines. Sometimes there will not be an author while other times there may not even be a title. The word Web and a period to indicate the publication medium. 9.
