Lesson 9.2 The Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem
3
The equation… Yesterday we talked about the Pythagorean Theorem… The history… The applications… But there is a second part to this theorem…it just keeps getting better and better!
4
The moment you’ve been waiting for! The Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem
5
If the lengths of the three sides of a triangle satisfy the Pythagorean equation, then the triangle is a…… Right Triangle! The Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem states:
6
If we are given the lengths of 3 sides of a triangle, we can determine whether or not that triangle is right by simply plugging the side lengths into the Pythagorean Theorem. In other words… This is where our Pythagorean Triples come into play…
7
Determine whether the triangle is right: Let’s Practice! 10 20 24 Step 1: write the formula Step 2: plug in known values Step 3: solve to see if the 3 values form a triple No! Not a right triangle!
8
Determine whether the triangle is right: Now you try… 8 15 17 Yes! It sure is!

Classwork Copy the following values in your notes and determine if the triangle formed is a right triangle. Justify your answer by using the Pythagorean Theorem…Be sure to show all work! 1.) 6, 8, 102.) 0.5, 1.2, 1.33.) 3, 4, 6 4.) 1, 2, 35.) 3, 8, 106.) 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 7.) 5, 8, 98.) 4, 6, 89.) 8, 15, 17 YES YES NO NO NO YES
