1) Look at the two diagrams below. In the 1 st diagram two soccer balls are 5m apart. In the 2 nd diagram two soccer balls are 8m apart. In which diagram is the gravitational attraction greatest and why? Diagram 01 Diagram 02 SPI 0807.12.5 to 12.6 Gravity Bellwork Jan 9, 2013 1 5 meters 8 meters Go Get Your Clickers!!!

Today’s Plan 1) Discuss objective(s), bell work, ask about birthdays. 2) Discuss the new BYOD policy 3) Take the quiz-click in your answers 4) View notes about acids and bases 5) Watch Youtube videos about acids and bases 7) (Time Permitting) Show quiz scores/discuss most missed 8) Copy this into your agenda! CWHW: No homework ! Silly Thought! I went to a 7-11 and asked for a 2 by 4 and box of 3 by 5’s. The clerk said “ten-four” 2 SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases

Acid Properties  An acid is any compound that increases the number of HYDRONIUM ions, H 3 O +, when dissolved in water.  Acids Have a Sour Flavor The sour taste of lemons, limes, and other citrus fruits is a result of citric acid.  Acids Change Colors in indicators like cabbage juice (they turn red in cabbage juice) Note: Show Youtube indicator video Link: Acid-Base Universal IndicatorAcid-Base Universal Indicator Notes SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases 3 Jan 23, 2012

Acid Properties Continued  Acids React with Metals Acids react with some metals to produce hydrogen gas. Ex: hydrochloric acid with zinc metal  Acids Conduct Electric Current When acids are dissolved in water, they break apart and form ions in the solution. The ions make it possible for the solution to conduct an electric current. Ex. Car battery Note: Show Youtube video of cheeseburgers in acid Link: Cheeseburgers in AcidCheeseburgers in Acid Notes SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases 4 Jan 23, 2012

Acid Properties (continued)  Acids Change Colors in Indicators A substance that changes color in the presence of an acid or base is an indicator. Notes 5 When acid is added, the color changes from pale blue to yellow. This flask contains water and an indicator called bromthymol blue.

How are acids used?  Sulfuric acid is (most common) used to make paper, paint, detergents, fertilizers and many other products.  Nitric acid is used to make fertilizers, rubber, and plastics.  Hydrochloric acid is used to separate metal from their ores by separating the metals from the material with which they are combined. Notes 6 SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases

How are acids used? (continued)  Hydrochloric acid is used in swimming pools and in your stomach.  Citric acid and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are found in orange juice and grapefruit juice.  Carbonic acid and phosphoric acid help give soft drinks a sharp taste. 7 SPI 0807.9.12 Acids and Bases Notes
