Prior to the Induction Team Who oversaw? EUSA organises Freshers’ Week activities Individual offices running the central and School events What was the experience of staff & students? No one really knew! Induction wasn’t on ‘the agenda’

So…what did Edinburgh do?

Biggest challenges Almost a ‘blank’ page when we started Misconceptions of what we do 3.5 staff: 12,000+ new students in September Silos Changing perceptions: Longitudinal induction & continual transitions Putting students at the centre Project fatigue The fact that we are a 3 year project We don’t have a network of similar colleagues (no NODA!) Enablers: Champions at various levels and roles Earlier projects which highlighted a need Early wins bought us favour Funding Introduced the Induction Team!

Scoping current practice Build a network of key colleagues Determine baseline student experience Determine Induction Team Strategy Raising the profile of induction Our Approach: Phase 1

Phase 1 Achievements

Phase 2: Scoping continued Engagement with staff Induction Team took ownership of key activities Engaging with Schools

Phase 2 Achievements Gearing Up for Induction Staff Event ‘Student Led’ pilot event with the School of Divinity

Phase 3: Enhancements Creation of an Induction Framework Focus on measuring impact

Phase 3 Achievements

Collaboration has been key!

Impact

Staff Feedback

Student Feedback More than 2/3 of the UG and PG respondents say that they feel they belong to the 'University of Edinburgh' after their Induction Week. Only 1 in 3 UG and PG students said that they felt 'Confident I can cope with the academic demand of my course'. Best thing about starting uni?: “Meeting new people, making new friends, pursuing interests and being challenged by academics. This, the university does very well.” 95% students found the New Student webpages useful

The Future

Discussion & Reflection How does our approach to induction/orientation compare with your own? Do our challenges mirror your own? Do our successes mirror your own? Your Questions
