1 Life of Christ The Sermon on the Mount © John Stevenson, 2014

2 Two authors do not independently express thought alike
The Nature of Parallel Accounts Two authors do not independently express thought alike

3 Luke 5:1-2 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.

4 Luke 5:3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.

5 Luke 5:4-5 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”

6 Luke 5:6-7 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.

7 Luke 5:8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

8 Luke 5:9-10 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.”

9 Luke 5:11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

10 Prophecy: “Those who are in darkness will see a great light” (4:14-16)
Preaching Ministry of Jesus Matthew Mark Luke Prophecy: “Those who are in darkness will see a great light” (4:14-16) Prophecy: “The time is fulfilled” (1:15) Prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me…” (4:18-19) “Repent for the Kingdom is at hand” (4:17) “Repent and believe” (1:15) “I must preach the kingdom of God” (4:43)

11 Matthew 5:1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

12 Birth of the Child who is to be the Savior
The King orders infants to be killed Baptized through the waters Law given from the Mount 40 days in the wilderness

13 Matthew 5:2-3 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

14 Blessed are… The poor in spirit Those who mourn The gentle
Those who hunger & thirst for righteousness The merciful Pure in heart Peacemakers The persecuted Theirs is the kingdom They will be comforted Inherit the earth They shall be satisfied Receive mercy See God Sons of God Theirs is the kingdom

15 You are... The salt of the earth The light of the world
…but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. (Matthew 5:13). A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (Matthew 5:14-15).

16 Matthew 5:16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 Matthew 5:17-18 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

18 The Old Testament Law The Sermon on the Mount The Ten Commandments
The Beatitudes The Case Laws The Case Laws Laws regarding worship Teachings regarding worship Cursings and Blessings Judgment and Salvation

19 Matthew 5:19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 Matthew 5:20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

21 You shall not commit murder
You have heard that the ancients were told... You shall not commit murder and Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court But I say to you... Everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court and...

22 But I say to you... Everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court and Whoever says to his brother, “You good-for-nothing,” shall be guilty before the supreme court and Whoever says, “You fool,” shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

23 Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.

24 Matthew 5:25-26 Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.

25 You shall not commit adultery
You have heard that it was said... You shall not commit adultery But I say to you... Everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

26 Matthew 5:29-30 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

27 Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce
It was said... Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce But I say to you... Everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

28 You have heard that the ancients were told...
You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord. But I say to you... Make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth… but... Let your statement be, “Yes, yes,” or “No, no;” anything beyond these is of evil.

29 An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth
You have heard that it was said... An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth But I say to you... Do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

30 Matthew 5:40-42 If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. 41 Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

31 You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy
You have heard that it was said... You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy But I say to you... Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

32 Matthew 5:46-48 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
