Mental and Emotional Support Project
You will assemble information about volunteer opportunities in your community that offer mentoring programs for children and teens. You will prepare a brochure describing these services. Use the following guidelines to succeed in this project. Choose an organization, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters Call the organization and find out if they are looking for volunteers or if there are other ways to participate or donate. Are there any requirements to be a volunteer? Find out if the organization has any guidelines that volunteers must follow. Is there an age requirement? Have students obtain information about Bowl for Kids’ Sake events, fundraising and awareness events that raise money annually for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Mental/Emotional Health is the ability to accept your self and others, express and manage emotions and deal with the demands and challenges you meet in your life. B. The importance of Good Mental Health is to maintain balance in your health triangle C. Characteristics of Good Mental and Emotional Health Sense of belonging Sense of purpose Positive outlook Self sufficiency Healthy self esteem People who can handle stress in positive ways are known as resilient. They have the ability to adapt effectively and recover from disappointment, difficulty, or crisis. D. Self Esteem is how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself. The more you feel loved and accepted the higher your self esteem and the more likely you will make healthful choices and your outlook on life will be more positive. Trying new challenges will raise your level of competence (having enough skills to do different things)

Benefits of Healthy Self Esteem Feel proud
Developing Self Esteem- starts at a very early age. With small accomplishments and positive reinforcements. No one succeeds the first time when attempting new tasks so it’s important to keep trying. Benefits of Healthy Self Esteem Feel proud Believe that setbacks are temporary Gives you confidence to confront challenges and overcome them Gives you confidence to try new things Learn new tasks Improving Your Self Esteem Avoid criticizing yourself Avoid people who constantly criticize you Focus on positive aspects about yourself Choose friends who value and respect you Replace negative self talk with supportive self talk Work toward accomplishments rather than perfection Consider your mistakes learning opportunities Try new activities to discover your talents Write down your goals and the steps you will take to achieve them Exercise regularly to feel more energized volunteer your time to help someone Accept the things your can’t change, and focus your energy on changing the things you can

II. Developing Personal Identity and Character
A. Your Personal Identity is your sense of self as a unique individual. Often depends on your age and circumstances. B. Role Models are people whose success or behavior serves as an example for you. Personality is a complex set of characteristics that makes you unique. It sets you apart from other people and determines how you will react in certain situations Character is made up of the distinct qualities that describe how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Good character is an outward expression of inner values . People with good character demonstrate core ethical values such as responsibility honesty, and respect. Traits of Good Character Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring citzenship

Steps to Working Toward a Positive Identity
Recognize your Strengths and Weaknesses- list your skills and strengths Demonstrate Positive Values- Surround yourself with positive supportive people, help someone else. Develop a Purpose in Your Life-Find something that you love to do, and do it frequently. Life does not have to be a contest Form meaningful relationships Avoid Unhealthful high-risk behaviors Contribute to community

III. Expressing Emotions in Healthful Ways
A. Emotions are signals that tell your mind and body how to react. Emotions may be affected by many things but the most common are hormonal changes especially during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. B. What are some common emotions? C. Dealing with your emotions in a positive way Empathy- the ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels. On a separate sheet of paper complete Numbers 1-5 and 7 on page 77. Questions to help you recognize your emotions and express them in positive ways
Why do I feel the way I do about this event? Why should I wait before responding? Will this event matter later on in my life? What can I do to feel better? Who can I ask to help me deal with my negative feelings? Defense Mechanisms are mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful emotions and situations. Such emotions as fear, guilt, or anger can be very damaging. For example in managing anger you should try the following: Do something to relax Channel your energy in a different direction Talk with someone you trust

Common Defense Mechanisms
Repression. Involuntarily pushing unpleasant feelings out of one’s mind Regression. Returning to behaviors characteristic of a younger age Denial. Lack of recognition of something that is obvious to others Projection. Attributing your own feelings or faults to another person or group Suppression. Pushing unpleasant feelings out of one’s mind Rationalization. Making excuses Compensation. Making up weaknesses and mistakes through gift giving, hard work or extreme efforts.
