2  ISI has small but significant roles at MHPCC  Bob Lucas is the CTO  Dan Davis is in charge of DoD Outreach  MHPCC has a central function within AFRL  It is also the locus of many HPCMP programs  As CTO and Outreach, ISI can be gate-keeper  Will see any research amenable to ISI research  Can steer both end-users and colleagues to ISI  Positions also give entre to DoD commands  Will concentrate on creating new research

3 1.Existing MHPCC research 2.AFRL Directed Energy research 3.Human Behavior HPC DoD center 4.JESPP, ICT and DEN for Officer Education 5.Hawai'i relationship with PMRF for HPC T&E 6.HPC and AI for K-12 for DoDEA, NSF, and Dept of Ed 7.HPC for Cyber Warfare Command via MHPCC/ISI SCI sites

4  Research Activities:  Large-Scale Data Management  Terabyte Level Database  Maritime and Airborne Cargo Tracking  Analysis Decision Support Systems  Modeling and Simulation Support  Computational Science Research:  Parallel Software Optimization  Software Integration  Test-bed Engineering  Virtual Training and Simulation Test-bed Environment  Subject Matter Research:  Scalable Computing Technology  Image Processing Algorithms  Information Fusion  High Fidelity Radar Simulations  Weather Forecasting Engineering Services  Computational Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry  Space Physics

5  Use MHPCC as springboard for ISI research  Leverage personal and professional contacts  Exploit MHPCC outreach efforts for ISI  Contact major commands to muster support  Include visible ISI/USC presence at MHPCC  Host MHPCC activities at ISI and at conferences  Encourage MHPCC authors to co-author with ISI  Investigate ISI/USC status (ReschProf?) for key research PhDs at MHPCC

16  MHPCC is an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) center  AFRL will pick UH/Lock-Mart or SAIC/ISI in Oct  Located in the Maui Research and Technology Park in Kihei  The MHPCC is a DSRC of the HPCMP  MHPCC operates varying configurations of computer clusters  Mana – 9,210 core Dell PowerEdge Cluster 93 rd in World  From Jaws - 5,120 core Dell Poweredge cluster  HOSC – 1,280 core Xeon Cluster

17  Significant portion of ~$20M/yr op budget  Ten year stability  Four-year base contract  2 x Three-year extensions  Wide ranging research project entrées  Visibility in DoD HPC realm  More SCI capability/visibility  Beach-head on Hawai’i, major DoD area  Good relationship opportunity with Hawaiian Senators 17

22  Three Requirements:  Viable Vision  Cogent Argument  Satisfactory Delivery  Three Masters:  AFRL  Senator Inouye  HMPCM Community  Three Approaches:  Answer AFRL concerns  Interact with Senator’s Office  Publish to make HPCMP look vital Cray Henry Dir. HPCMP Dean Schorr briefs Sen. Inouye Dr. David Hardy, Dir. Directed Energy, AFRL 22
