The simple present by Mauricio Yemi

When do we use the simple present? To talk about our routine To talk about facts or situations of our lives To talk about the frequency of an action

Let’s start with a verb Make We make breakfast every morning. Susan makes breakfast every morning.

Pay attention! Notice that when we use “Susan” in the sentence, we have to change the way we conjugate the verb: Susan makes breakfast every morning. We only need to make this change in affirmative sentences.

How do we change the verbs? For most verbs, just add the letter “s”: works travels makes lives plays If the verb ends in ‘o’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘s’, or ‘x’, add “es”: washes watches passes fixes does If the verb ends in consonant + ‘y’, remove ‘y’ and add “ies”: study – studiesworry – worries

What happens in negative sentences? We don’t make breakfast every morning. Susan doesn’t make breakfast every morning. Notice that the auxiliary verbs are different, but the conjugation of the verb is the same.

Let’s see when we use each auxiliary We use don’t for I, we, you, they I don’t like sushi. We use doesn’t for he, she, it She doesn’t like sushi.

How can we form questions? Do you make breakfast every morning? Does Susan make breakfast every morning?

In the simple present we can also use the verb “To Be” I am a student. She is happy. They are at home.

The difference is in the negative phrases, where we don’t need auxiliary verbs I am not a student. She is not happy. They are not at home.

We don’t need auxiliary verbs in the questions either Am I a student? Is she happy? Are they at home?

It is common to use frequency adverbs in the simple present I normally study in the morning. He never works at night. You are always tired. She is usually at home in the evening.

When you create questions, you can also use interrogative pronouns When do you normally study? Where does he work? Why are you always tired? How often does she travel to the beach?

That’s all for today! Would you like to see other explanations in our blog? Send a suggestion to mauricio@yemi.com.br See you next time!
