This lesson is intended for 1 st grade students for math The learning objective for this lesson is for students to be able to recognize from a short word problem if it is addition or subtraction and then solve the problem. This is stated in the Ohio Department of Educations content standards for Math: Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Represent and solve problems using addition and subtraction: Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

In this lesson you will be deciding whether a word problem is addition or subtraction and then solving the problem After the lesson you will be taking a quiz over the material, you may either review before taking the quiz or go straight to the quiz Click the subtraction sign to the left to go to the previous page, or the addition sign to go to the next slide

When deciding if you should add or subtract, here are some important key words to keep in mind Addition- Add, altogether, sum, both, in all, and total Subtraction- Difference, fewer, how many more, left, less, minus, need to, remains, words ending in “er” and subtract
7
There are 2 ways you can solve these problems You can use a number line like I used for this lesson plan Or in the classroom you can use counting chips to add or take away from
8
Joe has 7 pencils and Corey has 5. How many pencils do the boys have altogether? For this problem, you would simply do 7+5= 12 One way to solve this would be to look at a number line, start at 7 and then move forward 5 to get you to the answer of 12
9
Mary has 9 pieces of candy and Jane has 6, how many pieces of candy do the girls have in al? Again, you could look at the number line, start at 9 and move forward 6. So 9+6= 15
10
Carly has 8 erasers, she gives 3 of them to her friend Taylor. How many erasers does Carly have left? For this problem, you would start at the number 8 and move to the left 3 spaces. So 8-3= 5
11
Ben brought in 20 cookies for his class, the class ate 17 of them. How many cookies does he have left? There are 2 ways to solve this problem. You can either start at the 20 and move to the left 17 spaces and get 3, or count how many spaces are between 17 and 20
12
You have successfully completed the lesson plan, now its time for the quiz. You can either choose to go back to the lesson and review, or go onto the quiz Click the subtraction sign to go back to the lesson, and the addition sign to continue onto the quiz GOODLUCK!
