Using the DATA TABLE, respond to the following: TEMPERATURE Describe the trend(s) in temperature throughout the period. What might explain the trend(s)? Some possibilities: Daily warming and nightly cooling? Passage of a front (what kind?) Wind from the north? South? Change in air mass? (polar, tropical?) High or low pressure center?

DEW POINT Do the values indicate dry (below 50°F), comfortable (50-65°F), or “sticky” (above 65°F) air? How does dew point change throughout the period (if at all?) What could explain the change (if any) in dew point? Do the values suggest a continental air mass? Maritime? Neither?

HUMIDITY Describe the trend(s) in humidity throughout the period. What might explain the trend(s)? Some possibilities: Precipitation? Shift in wind direction? Change in air mass? (continental, maritime)

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE Describe the trend(s) in barometric pressure throughout the period. Do the trends suggest… …a low center is approaching? A high center? Neither? …weather should be becoming more fair? More foul? Neither?

Could there be a relationship between changes in pressure and changes in wind direction for your city? Use your map of the U.S. and tracing paper from last class to try to work this out!

Using the NATIONAL WEATHER MAP, respond to the following: With a marker, add a dot on every map to show your city’s location.

AIR MASSES: Use red (warm) and blue (cold) pencils to shade major air masses in the U.S. Which one(s) affected your city? Give their two-letter code, if possible. Was there a change in the air mass affecting your city during the time period tracked? If so, how would the change affect humidity? Dew point? Temperature?

FRONTS: Did any fronts affect your city? If so, what kind, and when? What changes in weather would they be likely to bring? (Temperature? Precipitation?)

PRESSURE: Note the location of any high pressure or low pressure centers that may have affected your city. What kind of weather would they bring?

WIND: Based on locations of highs, lows, and isobars on the map, what wind direction would you expect in your city? How would this wind direction affect the temperature in your city? Do the highs, lows, and isobars suggest any changes in wind direction during the time period? If so, how would they affect temperature?

WIND SPEED: Based on the isobars, fronts, and pressure centers, what would you expect to be the wind speed? (e.g. light and variable, calm, gusty, gentle, moderate, strong, none of these?)

PRECIPITATION: Would you expect to see precipitation in your city during the time period tracked? If so, at what time, and of what type (rain, snow)?
