Formal Organizations FO: a highly organized group with specific goals or purposes and clearly defined roles W/in these fo’s bureaucracies exist –B: chain of command with defined roles for each level

Common Features of Bureaucracies 1.Clear-cut division of labor 2.Clearly defined chain of command 3.Formal system of rules 4.People are interchangeable, it’s the positions that are important 5.Little or no emotional interaction among employees

Pros and Cons of Formal Organizations Pros Organized Goal Oriented Lasts beyond the term of service of an individual Gets the job done with little emotional hindrance Cons Competition; job security Complex channels A poor leader=a poor organization Friendship doesn’t play a role in driving your work

Iron Law of Oligarchy Oligarchy- power is held among a central few (school board, CEOs, Board of Directors, etc) –This theory states that power in a bureaucracy with become increasingly centralized over time, as natural leaders take on leadership roles, thereby gaining more power
