Earth’s Surface Changes Processes

Weathering The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces.
These pieces do not move to a new location, they simply break down, but remain next to one another. Weathering is caused by water, as it freezes and thaws, and by certain chemical reactions that loosen the bonds holding rocks together.

Weathering Examples

Erosion The process that breaks up and carries away the rock and soil that make up the Earth’s surface Caused by flowing water, rain, glaciers, and wind

Erosion Examples

Deposition The process when water, wind, or ice drops sediment in new locations Size and weight of the sediment is a factor in deposition. Think of the word deposit. The sediment is DEPOSITED some place new!

Deposition Examples

Putting It All Together
First, rocks are broken down into small pieces. This process is known as "weathering." Small pieces of dirt and sand are then picked up by forces of nature in a process known as "erosion." When those sediments are left in a new place, this is called "deposition."
