1 READY TO TEACH SM EDI ® Lessons ©2013 All rights reserved. EDI Lesson Overview 4 th Grade Math Learning Objective: We will compare multi-digit numbers using symbols. Focus Standard: 4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Support Standard: SMP 1, SMP 3, SMP 6, SMP 7 Prerequisite(s): 2.NBT.4 Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. 4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example recognize that 700  70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division. Special Instructions: One method for remembering the correct symbol to use is to remind students that the symbol points to the smaller number. Interpretations of answers in Skill Development/Guided Practice are based on the meaning of the relevant place values. These interpretations can be written or orally delivered. Vocabulary Academic: symbols, determine, identify, interpret Content: Support: Common Core Shifts in Mathematics Shift 1 Focus Shift 2 Coherence Shift 3 Fluency Shift 4 Deep Understanding Shift 5 Application Shift 6 Dual Intensity Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) SMP1 Make sense of problems SMP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively SMP3 Construct arguments and critique the reasoning of others SMP4 Model with math SMP5 Use appropriate tools SMP6 Attend to precision SMP7 Make use of structure SMP8 Look for regularity in repeated reasoning

Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. READY TO TEACH SM EDI ® Lessons ©2013 All rights reserved. What are we going to do? What are symbols? Symbols are __________. CFU Students, you already know how to find the value of a digit by knowing its position in a multi-digit number. Now, we will compare multi-digit numbers using symbols. Make Connection 1 shapes that stand for something Vocabulary We will compare multi-digit numbers using symbols 1. Learning Objective Activate Prior Knowledge Place value: The place is the position of a digit in a number. The value is the worth of the digit due to its position. 1. What is the value of the 2 in 253,987 ? 200,000 20,000 2. What is the value of the 2 in 321,000 ?

Why is the number 367,325 less than the number 461,589 ? A It has less thousands. B It has less ten thousands. C It has less hundred thousands. Why is the number 725,582 greater than the number 721,799 ? A It has more thousands. B It has more ten thousands. C It has more hundred thousands. Explain why the number 634,645 is equal to the number 634,645. In your own words, what does it mean to compare numbers? To compare numbers _______. CFU Comparing Numbers 2 figure out Vocabulary Concept Development To compare numbers means to determine 2 whether a number is less than, greater than, or equal to another number.
