3 Cochula’s Journey Southeastern Tribes Where they LiveTheir Transportation Customs and Beliefs

4 The southern Native Americans believed in spirits within the earth and the sky. “Every tree, bird, animal, had a spirit that must not be offended. So when the Indian went hunting they had to thank the spirit for blessing them with the animal such as in Cochula’s Journey.

5 Customs and Beliefs Native Americans believed that the spirits could be reached by dance, prayer, song, and other religious rituals. They also celebrated many different occasions that we celebrate such as weddings, having success in a battle, etc. Menu

6 Southeastern Tribes The Southeastern tribes were the Choctaws, Cherokees, Creeks, Chickasaws, and Seminoles. Press one of the buttons to learn more about a tribe. 7 Cochula’s Tribe Creeks The name of the Creek tribe was usually the name of the town the natives lived in. They spoke about 6 different languages, had their own chiefs, customs, were physically well built, with copper red skin color. Find out more about the Creek nation by looking at our literature cluster and going to the Creeks website. Menu

8 Their Transportation What did the Native Americans use for transportation? De Soto pushed the tribes to walk and carry supplies. He treated them like slaves. By foot was the main transportation way for Native Americans during this expedition. Can you imagine walking this trail?

9 A transportation tool for Native Americans that is commonly known is the canoe and kayak. Their Transportation These boats were built for moving among hunting grounds, fishing, going to war, and carrying goods. Find out more about this transportation in the Native Americans book in the literature cluster or do a Google search online. You may choose to include transportation in your Tribe stack. Menu

10 The Spanish introduced horses and ponies that made life easier for the Native Americans. Their Transportation The Natives called horses, “Spirit Dogs” or “Medicine Dogs.” They were able to hunt and fight with speed with the horses. Menu

11 Where They Live Introduction The different tribes lived across the land depending on food and shelter. Most of the Southeast tribes became farmers and lived in villages.
