Project Overview national initiative - 64 Canadian universities funded through Canada Foundation for Innovation and govt/instititional partners goals: –increase quantity, breadth & depth of current literature for academic researchers –maximize use and utility of content through networked means focus on pan-Canadian licensing of electronic journals in science, engineering, health and environment

Project Chronology June 1998: 4 regional proposals to CFI for digital library developments Oct 1998: CFI turns back regional proposals; invites signatories to reformulate into a single national proposal Nov 1998: Cdn Assoc of Research Libraries spearheads proposal dev. Dec 1998: Consultants engaged

Apr 1999: national proposal submitted to CFI, with 64 signatory universities Apr-June 1999: CFI evaluation process June 1999: CFI awards funding of $20M; $30M to come from revenue partners July 1999-present: –multi-institutional agreement –governance, operations and advisory structures –recruitment of executive director

Future aggressive schedule once project staffing in place extend participation to other CFI-eligible institutions two CFI competitions forthcoming

CNSLP Distinguishing Features significant public policy for Canada unprecedented collaboration & commitment among Cdn universities accommodates unique federal/provincial jurisdictions over higher ed & research agreement on stable funding model and national negotiations process draws on institutional and consortium expertise
