Dubrovnik 2009. Conference Island of MLJET Island of MLJET NEEDS & OPPORTUNITIES IN INFRASTRUCTURE KOMUNALNO MLJET D.O.O. FRANO HAZDOVAC, DIRECTOR

General information Mljet is situated in the South Dalmatian Archipelago. The southernmost and easternmost of all our major islands Mljet is situated in the South Dalmatian Archipelago. The southernmost and easternmost of all our major islands Area 100.4 km 2 with an average width of 3 km and length of 37 km (8.-largest island in Croatia). Area 100.4 km 2 with an average width of 3 km and length of 37 km (8.-largest island in Croatia). Population: 1111 (according to the 2001 census.) Population: 1111 (according to the 2001 census.) 21 villages, 13 coastal villages and 8 in the interior of the island 21 villages, 13 coastal villages and 8 in the interior of the island

Observation Framework Distance from the mainland (5 NM) and county center Dubrovnik (24 NM) Distance from the mainland (5 NM) and county center Dubrovnik (24 NM) Dispersal and settlement total poor population (average: 11 inhabitants / m2 and 53 inhabitants / village) Dispersal and settlement total poor population (average: 11 inhabitants / m2 and 53 inhabitants / village) Extremely long island (37 km air distance) Extremely long island (37 km air distance) Outdated and inadequate municipal infrastructure Outdated and inadequate municipal infrastructure Variations in the number of users of public services and utilities (winter and summer conditions) Variations in the number of users of public services and utilities (winter and summer conditions) Low usage renewable energy sources Low usage renewable energy sources

Regional water supply system NPKLM flow: 22 l/sec

Local water supply system flow: 12 l/sec Water supply is provided by brackish water desalination - reverse osmosis Water supply is provided by brackish water desalination - reverse osmosis Installed 3 independent RO Systems Installed 3 independent RO Systems 1. RO Sobra capacity 800 m3/day 2. RO Blato capacity 250 m 3 /day 3. RO Kozarica capacity 50 m 3 /day Water storage capacity of 1300 m3 Water storage capacity of 1300 m3

Local water supply system future plan completed RO in function

Water supply on island Distribution of potable water is organized with tank cars Distribution of potable water is organized with tank cars Water supply system exists only in 3 villages Water supply system exists only in 3 villages Needs for drinking water are major features of the production and supply Needs for drinking water are major features of the production and supplyCosts Water transportation Water transportation Electricity Electricity Maintenance, spare parts and raw materials Maintenance, spare parts and raw materials Labor Force Labor Force Inadequate position of the production units Inadequate position of the production units

Annual electric consumption RO Systems

Needs in water supply Additional water flow of 10 l / sec (NPKLM / RO) Additional water flow of 10 l / sec (NPKLM / RO) Water network in the length of 50 km Water network in the length of 50 km Water tanks with total capacity of 15000 m3 Water tanks with total capacity of 15000 m3 Additional sources of power for pumping water and producing Additional sources of power for pumping water and producing Additional sources of power for lifting water level Additional sources of power for lifting water level

Opportunities in water supply Installing PV panels on all water facilities approx: 5000 m2 Installing PV panels on all water facilities approx: 5000 m2 Use of PV panels on the surface of 5000 m2 gives a 1 MW installed capacity what is more than enough for the whole island needs Use of PV panels on the surface of 5000 m2 gives a 1 MW installed capacity what is more than enough for the whole island needs Use the resulting energy in places without the possibility of accession to the electrical grid Use the resulting energy in places without the possibility of accession to the electrical grid Potential water use in the raised geographic points (gravitational potential) Potential water use in the raised geographic points (gravitational potential)

Drainage and sewage In the phase of major projects and obtaining permits for building 8 drainage systems on the island In the phase of major projects and obtaining permits for building 8 drainage systems on the island

Drainage and sewage Energy needs For 7 drainage systems in areas outside the National Park Mljet installed power will be 9.43 kW / system = 66.0 kW total For 7 drainage systems in areas outside the National Park Mljet installed power will be 9.43 kW / system = 66.0 kW total For the drainage system in the National Park Mljet installed power will be 161.83 kW For the drainage system in the National Park Mljet installed power will be 161.83 kW In the case of the power failure additional sources of electricity supply should be provided with diesel engines In the case of the power failure additional sources of electricity supply should be provided with diesel engines

Independent Municipal Power System – IMPS for Sutmiholjska bay example

Sutmiholjska bay

General information for Sutmiholjska bay This is part of the village of Babino Polje, former fishing village but now formed as a new potentially interesting tourist destination. Located on the south side of the island suitable for the use of renewable energy The lack of communal infrastructure needs investments in the construction of water supply, sewerage, public lighting, etc., presents a challenge to think about forming an Independent Municipal Power System (IMPS)

IMPS Independent Municipal Power System RES: 1.SOLAR 1.WIND (!) 1.BIOMASS (?) 1.WAVE POWER (?) 2.HYBRID SISTEM WATER SUPPLYDRAINAGEPUBLIC LIGHTING
