1 BACKGROUND The Grunnvåg waterworks is a water supply system is a on the Island Senja in Troms in northern Norway. The system supplies 8, 1 home and 1 farm. The farm has plans for some tourist lodging. The source is a natural spring and a small dam is built to hold the water and act as a reservoir during periods of high consumption. The waterworks was constructed in 1951. At that time the requirements regarding hygienic safety barriers were not as strict as today. The spring itself provides high quality water, but the dam is liable to contamination. In order to meet current requirements of two hygienic barrieres the waterworks needs upgrading. This is also needed for the water to be certified for use by local tourist facilities. TASKS What are the main threats to the water quality of the exisiting design? What changes would you suggest in order to upgrade the well design so that it meets current requirements? Make a schematic drawing of how you suggest to upgrade the design of the reservoir and water intake.
