INTRODUCTION This is my 8 th grade exit project. In this project you will learn much about what happened in the 1940’s. The 1940’s were one of the worst decades in history

1940- BATTLE OF BRITAIN The Battle started in July 1940 The Germans expected to take over Britain in less than a month Britain received tanks, planes, and guns from the US During the war Germany tried to attack daily but was stopped every time, so they then started bomb the cities an killed thousands of people

1940- BATTLE OF BRITAIN Germany lost 3,368 men while Britain lost over 30,000 people, almost all of them were civilians

1941- PEARL HARBOR Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 The Japanese hoped to destroy the US fleet to prevent them from helping in the war Japan sent 181 panes and 5 submarines The attack lasted less than 2 hours

1941- PEARL HARBOR Over 2,000 Americans died and 1,143 Americans were injured Japan only lost 28 planes and 5 submarines

1942- BATLE OF STALINGRAD When the Russian leader heard of the attack he sent his army to protect the city When the Germans came, the Russians trapped them inside the city so they couldn’t leave The German’s army general Paulus tried to surrender but Hitler forbid him to The main problem that the Germans faced was cold many died or got frostbite from the temperature

1942- BATLE OF STALINGRAD After the Germans had no hope of surviving, general Paulus finally surrendered on 1943, causing 91,000 Germans to get taken

1943- WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING In a Warsaw Ghetto, a group of Jews started a small rebellion of 200 members After the started their own rebellion they learned of another one that had already started and decide to join them so now they had over 750 people After that, the Polish army sent them supported them by sending bombs and guns After the Germans knew what was happening they came to take everyone in the ghetto to a concentration camp When the Germans came, the Jews killed all of them rescuing about 5,000-6,000 Jews

1943- WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING When the Germans came, the Jews killed all of them rescuing about 5,000-6,000 Jews Also, by killing the Germans in the camp they got thousands more of the Jews that were already inside the camp They now had over 50,000 people When the Germans came back, they completely destroyed the camp in three days They killed or sent the rest of the Jews to concentration camps

1944- HITLER SURVIVES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT In 1942 a man named Count Von Strauffenberg joined the plot to kill Hitler when he was promoted he had access to Hitler's briefing sessions Strauffenberg used a briefcase bomb to kill Hitler but failed After, Hitler left to go to Italy While gone Hitler's most trusted men rounded up the plotters and killed them or sent them to concentration camps

1945- US DROPS 2 BOMBS OVER JAPAN Truman, the US president warned Japan that they had an Atomic bomb and told them to surrender When Japan refused to surrender president Truman ordered an atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima The bomb killed 70,000 people instantly When Japan still refused to surrender another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing 20,000 people instantly After the second bomb Japan gave their unconditional surrender

1946- THE NUREMBERG TRIALS The Nuremberg trials were the trials that the Nazis faced There were four judges each one from a different countries, The judges came from the US, USSR, France, and Britain Each judge wore headphones so they could hear the trial in their own language

1946- THE NUREMBERG TRIALS It took over 40 days to read just the charges The reason it took so long to read the charges was because they had over 20,000 words The whole trial took 10 months to finish and over 200 court sessions took place during it

1947- flu virus in Hong Kong When 12 reported cases of the flu virus, 4 had already died in the hospital The reason that the people were so scared was that the virus should only have an affect on birds not people the people of Hong Kong put together a giant operation to get rid of all birds in Hong Kong

1947- flu virus in Hong Kong A group of 1,000 men went to over 1,000 markets and 160 farms After they collected over 1.4 million birds they covered them with plastic bags and threw them into land fills

1948- Gandhi killed Gandhi was killed by Nathan Godse and 3 other accomplices Godse shot Gandhi while he was walking to a prayer meeting at the Birla house Godse was sentenced to death while the three others were sentenced to 18 years- life After Gandhi’s death, thousands of people gathered around the Birla house to mourn

1949- First Non-stop Flight Around the World Capt. James Gallagher took off from Carswell Air Force base He had a crew of 14 men He flew a B-50 Superfortress called the Lucky Lady II During there flight they refueled 4 different times in mid-air They averaged 249 MPH with a weight over 100,000 pounds

1949- First Non-stop Flight Around the World They averaged 249 MPH with a weight over 100,000 pounds After their flight was over they landed back at Carswell Air Force base All of the crew received medals for their accomplishment Their flight took 94 hours to complete and they flew over 23,000 miles
