Progress 8 measure Progress 8 will be introduced for all schools in 2016. performance tables published in late 2016/early 2017, will show the Progress 8 results. Progress 8 will also be used for floor standards from 2016. Schools will receive ‘shadow data’ showing their Progress 8 score based on 2014 results. The ‘expected levels of progress’ measure will no longer appear in performance tables from 2016????
5
School performance measure Progress 8 measure will be the headline indicator of school performance showing the amount of progress made in each school in the component parts of the Progress 8 measure. Progress measures for: English mathematics The group of EBacc subjects overall The group of other GCSEs and AS levels overall The group of approved vocational qualifications overall.
6
Science qualifications All students have to study science up to the age of 16. The key stage 4 science curriculum is compulsory in maintained schools and academies are required to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, including English, mathematics and science, up to the age of 16. In 2016 and 2017, core and additional science GCSE will take up one slot each in the Progress 8 measure. Core science GCSE alone will take up one slot. Separate GCSEs in biology, chemistry, physics and computer science each take up one slot. The ‘double science’ level 1/level 2 certificates that are offered by some awarding organisations will take up two slots provided they are recognised for inclusion in performance tables. All these qualifications can count in the EBacc slots in the measure. If more than three slots would be taken up, a fourth slot in the ‘open group’ may be used. Changes to science GCSEs New science GCSEs will be available for teaching from September 2016, with the first examinations in summer 2018. There will be single science GCSEs (biology, chemistry and physics) and a combined science (double award) GCSE. There will be no awarding of a combined science (single award) GCSE from 2018 onwards. Yet to confirm the timing for the introduction of the new GCSE in computer science.

Accountability measures – EBACC within progress 8 To pass the science element of the EBacc pupils either need to: get an A* to C pass in core and additional science take 3 single sciences (from biology, chemistry, computer science and physics) and get an A* to C pass in 2 of them get A* to C passes in science double award Computer science GCSEs will be included in the science element of the EBacc for the first time from 2014. Only the following qualifications will be eligible in 2014: –1.AQA level 1/2 GCSE in computer science –2.OCR level 1/2 GCSE in computing The following qualifications will also be eligible for the EBacc from 2015: –Pearson Edexcel level 1/2 GCSE in computer science –WJEC level 1/level 2 GCSE in computer science Further Additional Science does not count for EBACC Information from DFE Policy unit Sept 2014

Implications of EBACC For single sciences, pupils must be entered for three of biology, chemistry, physics and computer science, and get A*-C in any two in order to pass the measure. Further Additional Science is not on the list of qualifications that count towards the EBacc. Until the start of the new qualifications, there is clearly nothing to stop schools using the Core/Additional/Further Additional route if they choose. This is, however, obviously a short term measure Information from DFE Policy unit Sept 2014
