November 19 th Solve the following: 3 3 5 2 7 4
2
- Exponents & the Order of Operations - Approximately November 19 th to December 3rd
3
This unit will help you develop an understanding of exponents, the power laws, and the importance of a standardized order of operations for when solving equations. We will learn how to work with: - Powers/Exponents - The Order of Operations
4
Powers -A numerical expression written as: -a x -a = the base -x = the exponent
5
Powers -A power is showing us a product of equal factors (ex) 2 x 2 x 2
6
Powers (ex) (-2) 3 = (-2) x (-2) x (-2) (ex) –(2 3 ) = -(2 x 2 x 2) (ex) –2 3 = -(2 x 2 x 2)
7
Powers In your table groups, create an informational poster summarizing 1 of the 6 laws we will learn about in this unit. Your poster needs to have: -Title- Clear example -Explanation in your own words - One practice question (answer on back)
8
November 20 Solve the following: 4 3- 2 2 (4+3) 4
9
November 25 th -Next hand-in day is November 26 th – Solve the following & state what rule you use to do so: (4 3 ) 5 7 2 ÷ 7 1 (4 x 3) 4
10
On Wednesday, we spent more time reviewing: -Power of a Power -Power of a Product -Quotient of a Power Today you will have an opportunity to practice these rules through different options. This is to be handed in at the end of today’s class.
11
November 26 th -Hand-In Day! – Solve the following & state what rule you use to do so: (2 x 1) 5 5 15 ÷ 5 7 (4 2 ) 4
12
November 27 th -Your next hand-in day is Wednesday, Dec 4th – Solve the following & state what rule you use to do so: 8 0 54 2 ÷ 54 1 (2 ÷ 4) 3 (9 2 ) 3
13
We have now reviewed our remaining 3 Power Laws: -Zero Exponent Law -Power of a Quotient -Product of Powers Today you will have an opportunity to practice these rules through different options. This is to be handed in at the end of today’s class.
14
December 2nd -Your next hand-in day is Wednesday, Dec 4th – Solve the following & state what rule you use to do so: (4 2 ) 8 (6x2) 3 4 8 ÷ 4 3 -6 0 (5÷2) 4 3 3 x 3 4
15
Powers (ex) (-2) 3 = (-2) x (-2) x (-2) (ex) –(2 3 ) = -(2 x 2 x 2) (ex) –2 3 = -(2 x 2 x 2)
16
Using the provided template, create an entry in your interactive notebook summarizing The Six Power Laws. You need: -to explain the law in words -explain the law with an example
17
December 3 rd -Your next hand-in day is Wednesday, Dec 4th – Solve the following: (-5) 3 -(5) 3 -5 3
18
December 4 th -Hand-In Day, pick a M.M from November 27 th to December 4 th – Solve the following: (-2) 0 -(7) 2 -5 3
19
December 9 th -Next hand-in day will be Wednesday, Dec 18 th – Solve the following equation while showing ALL your steps: (6 2 x 6 2 ) 1 +5 0 Remember your rules & B.E.D.M.A.S
20
December 9 th -Next hand-in day will be Wednesday, Dec 18 th – Solve the following equation while showing ALL your steps: 4 0 +[(-4) 2 x (-4) 2 ] Remember your rules & B.E.D.M.A.S
21
December 10 th -Next hand-in day will be Wednesday, Dec 18 th – Solve the following equation while showing ALL your steps: (-8) 3 + (7 3 x 7 3 ) Remember your rules & B.E.D.M.A.S
22
December 16 th -Next hand-in day will be Wednesday, Dec 18 th – Solve the following, remember your Power Laws and show ALL your steps: a)(-5) 5 b)-8 0 c)6 5 - 3 3
23
December 17 th -Next hand-in day will be Wednesday, Dec 18 th – Identify, then correct any errors in the work shown. (3 2 x 3 3 ) 2 = (3 2x3 ) 2 = (3 6 ) 2 = 3 6+2 = 3 8 = 6561
24
