Announcements II Final Exam – cont. –Help Session (Tues. 12/15, 3:30-4:30, Sequoia 452) –Format(52 multiple choice questions – including two bonus questions – Bring Scantron SC982-E) –All material covered is possible for questions –Chapters where we spent more weeks (16 and 18) will have more questions –I will post some example organic chemistry problems –I tend to select what I think are easy questions that students haven’t done well at for repeat questions (Make up quiz example)

Chapter 20 Organic Chemistry Functional Groups What you need to know: Class name Identification Polar groups Alcohols ROH (R = rest of molecule) OH group is polar Example: CH 3 OH (methanol) Ethers ROR Example (CH 3 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 3 = diethyl ether)

Final Exam Review Chapter 24 – Bonding Theory Common mistake on Exam 3 and Make Up Quiz – coordination complex electrons come from ligand lone pairs (not from metals or from other electrons on ligands) Know which d orbitals overlap more with ligand bonds in octahedral complexes and which overlap less Know how overlap leads to a split in the d orbital energies Know difference between low spin and high spin filling of d orbitals
