Israel Kings David and Solomon united Israel. Capital was Jerusalem Israel later became split into 2 kingdoms (Israel and Judah)

Roman Rule Judah was captured by the Romans and ruled by a Roman governor called a Procurator

Zealots Zealots-Jews who rebelled and fought Roman rule Jews settled in remote locations to carry out their Jewish traditions Powerful Roman Army would crush any rebellions

Exiled In 132 A.D Jews rebelled again and fail. Romans exiled Jews from Jerusalem and banned them from return Jews branched out all over By 700 Jews had set up communities as far west as Spain and as far east as central Asia

Jesus Jesus of Nazareth began traveling and preaching from 30 A.D to 33 A.D Judaea through Galilee Assembled his 12 closest followers called Apostles

Rejection Many people rejected the teaching of Jesus and did not think he was the Messiah Romans did not like people forming large crowds. They feared Jesus was starting a political revolution against the Roman government. Jews felt he did not hold Jewish traditions and was blasphemous claiming he was the son of God.

Death Around A.D 33 Jesus arrived in Jerusalem and was greeted by a huge crowd Here Jesus celebrated the “Last Supper” Upon seeing the large crowds and fearing trouble, Jesus was arrested He was charged with treason- or disloyalty to the government punishable by cruxifiction

Jesus’ Message Spreads Message quickly spread through Palestine Why? Local leaders feared his success would upset Roman rulers Found innocent but wanted to please rulers so crucified (put to death on a cross) him By A.D. 100 Christianity gained many followers in parts of the Roman Empire.

A New Religion Christians began practicing in catacombs -underground burial rooms Christianity-started by Jesus Born in Judah/Judea in Roman province of Palestine. Grew up in Nazareth Born into a Jewish family Disciples were his followers Apostles-Spread teachings of Jesus throughout the Mediterranean Who were they?
