HVPP4 Reconfigurable patch panel for Pixel sensor bias distribution Allows delaying of power supply modules until inversion sets in (>300kchf) Designed by R. Boyd and built by the collaboration at CERN, including D. Jana and R. Labbai All 1800 (+spares) channels were tested to 1kV Installed in May 2008 Has provided a convenient service point for troubleshooting bias problems in the Pixel detector

Assembly in SR1 – connectivity tests M. Saleem Started during Pixel Detector integration in SR1, 99.8% of channels working Repeated after installation and services connection in ATLAS Still > 99% of channels working Problems still arise All the Oklahoma group has contributed to effort to understand opens in sensor bias circuits Much shift time is spent troubleshooting and tuning unhappy channels, from various causes

Jana contributed to DSP code validation for the Pixel Rod’s 2008 Code is validated in SR1 on ToothPix, the Pixel detector test stand This is a continuing activity, as new code is continuously developed Other commissioning shifts covered by OU physicists at CERN include M5 run (data read out stream) 2007 Data quality shifts for off line monitoring 2008 ATLAS engineering run 2008

Shifts Category 1 – 42 required, last year, 47 covered Category 2 - Pixel - OU physicists Pixel DCS (Detector Control System) DSP code validation (Off-line monitoring – B. Abbot) IDGen (Inner Detector cooling, gas, environment) R. Boyd ID Expert shifts (6/yr.) ATLAS (R. Boyd) SLIMOS (Shift Leader in Matters of Safety), since 2005 (2 – 4 /mo.) Patrol on call (securing cavern safety for beam) – 1 in 2009 + training (6/yr.)

In addition to shifts, R. Boyd Serves as ATLAS (and Pixel) Laser Safety Officer Documentation Training Coordination of laser interventions Annual inspection and safety tests Serves on ATLAS safety team, which meets weekly Manages underground access and other safety issues for Pixel Pixel DSS (Detector Safety System) responsible Represents the Pixel detector group in ATLAS Operation Management and Counting Room Management meetings (for infrastructure) Attends the weekly ID and CERN EN/CV cooling coordination meeting

OU MS Engineering student L. Devareddy participated with Ohio State and Oklahoma State in a radiation test of new VCSEL’s and PIN diode’s for Pixel upgrades in 2007 OU and Okla. State have provided support for annual irradiation runs since R. Boyd coordinating electronics effort for upgrade to ID cooling using binary coolant mixtures Sonar used to determined ratio of mix and as a flow meter Control signals for cooling plant IBL (Insertable B layer) Replacement to be inserted when radiation damage limits usefulness of Pixel b layer Recently partnered with Okla. State Univ. to develop and deliver a temperature controlled patch panel for the opto boards, which convert electrical signals to optical (and vice versa), just outside the Pixel volume Anticipate playing a central role in development assembly, testing and installation of IBL at CERN

All ATLAS detectors have proven performance in recent months OU personnel have received training in many areas in preparation for running OU is already booked for 41 of a required 30 shifts in 2010 (Pixel shifts, only) ID (Pixel) cooling is now running reliably, with regular maintenance (about 2 leaks per week) Beams resume mid-month IBL effort is under way
