2 Subproject on statistical modeling Titles of the PhD projects Title: Statistical and mathematical models for HIV infection in Ethiopia by Fasil Tessema Supervision: Ziv Shkedy and Marc Aerts (UHasselt) Title: The statistical analysis of spatially correlated survival data with applications in Malaria by Yehenew Getachew Supervision: Luc Duchateau (UGent) and Paul Janssen (UHasselt) Title: The statistical analysis of the Jimma longitudinal family survey of youth: Wondwossen Kassahun Supervision: Geert Molenberghs (UHasselt and KULeuven) and Geert Verbeke (KULeuven)

Plans for the coming year Research visits by Fasil, Yehenew and Wondwossen to UHasselt, UGent and/or KULeuven (visits are related to the PhD work and are within the context of sandwich grants) [three times three months]. Further contribute to the curriculum building (master at Jimma University) [See also Section 6].

6 6. Other remarks Two broaden the scope of our intended capacity building at Jimma University we recently submitted a North-South-South proposal to VLIR-UOS. The IUC partner university 1: Jimma, University, Ethiopia The IUC partner university 2: University Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique

7 Subproject on schistosomiasis and malaria 1. Titles the PhD projects Epidemiology of Malaria at the Gilgel Gibe dam region by Sultan Suleman Screening of Schistosomiasis at Gilgel Gibe dam region by Zeleke Mekonnen

8 2. Information on visits Sultan & Zeleke arrive November 2 nd for 4 months of training in Antwerp. 3. Information on equipment purchased Ultrasonograpy machine (Mindray M5) that was shipped to Jimma in July 2008. A training has been given.

Other remark/problem/suggestions A spin off is currently being synthesized - an FP7 network proposal (designated IATRICS - Intercontinental Antibiotic Trans Resistance Initiative and Comprehensive Surveillance) to be submitted by Microbiology Department, Antwerp University and funded by the European Community.
