Classroom Vocabulary Practice, practice practice (bell work)…This is a short collection of vocabulary practice activities for upper grades. Most can be completed in about 5 min. after modeling an example. My students always had a “word of the week” to learn new word parts and I liked to use a lot of variety for practice. This is my collection for individual word and multiple word practice. We also used Marzano and Frayer Models, which are not included here. There are a few additional resources included as well. (an interesting word for an etymology study, word part lists and directions for a root word project.) Of all the strategies tried over the years, the Connect Two was one of my favorites. Students really had to think about how they were going to connect their words. I would let them choose which two they wanted to connected with the stipulation that it could not be two they had already done. Across the years, they came up with some very insightful connections. Students kept a notebook for their vocabulary. They were asked to use the guide words in the upper right of each sheet to help them keep organized. Mrs. Smith helpforlearning@yahoo.com

Root Word Project Mrs. Smith helpforlearning@yahoo.com CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. Divide students into groups of three to four students. Supply each group with poster size paper (I used butcher paper) and colored markers. Students will need to select a base word from their list. Complete the poster according to the directions. Internet Resources Morewords.com Wordnavigator.com Findtheword.com www.english-for-students.com
