4. PURE SUBSTANCE cannot be separated by physical means (sorting, filtering, heating, cooling), All particles making it up are the same ALWAYS HOMOGENOUS! –Gold –Table Salt

5. HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture that has the same composition throughout. –UNOPENED can of soda –Alloys –Kool-Aid –Salt water

6. HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture in which the composition is not the same throughout. –Chicken Noodle Soup –Italian Salad Dressing

7. ELEMENT A substance made up of only one type of atom. Each has a unique symbol. –Silver (Ag) –Gold (Au) –Hydrogen (H) –Oxygen (O)

8. COMPOUND A pure substance that is made of 2 or more elements chemically combined. Can only be separated by chemical means (burning, chemical reactions). Smallest part called a molecule. Each has a unique formula. –Table Salt (NaCl) –Rock Salt (CaCl 2 ) –Water (H 2 O)
