Three Major Native Groups

The Aztecs Lived in Mexico Practiced ritual sacrifice

The Maya The Maya were the first to develop the concept of zero.
They formed a 365 day calendar. They had a form of Language that they portrayed in Hieroglyphs.

The Inca Native to Peru. This Native American group lived high up in the Andes Mountains. They farmed the limited mountainside using terraces.

Arrival of Europeans The Spanish arrived around 1500.
Hernan Cortez was one of these conquistadors. The Spanish defeated the Aztecs and their leader Montezuma II.

Introduction of disease
The Natives had no immunity to European disease. Measles, Chicken Pox, and Smallpox were often deadly. Disease killed nearly 90% of the Native population.
