5 The phoneme has three functions
1. constitutive function 2. recognitive function 3. distinctive function

7 The phoneme can be studied in two ways
as independent sound [t] [d], e.g. bride [braid] – bright [brait] as a variant of a sound, e.g. Let us – Let them

9 The allophones which do not undergo any distinguishable changes in speech are called principal. door – dawn. Allophones that occur under influence of the neighboring sounds in different phonetic situations are called subsidiary

10 "subsidiary allophones".
 deal – day – did [d] is slightly palatalized  bedtime – bad pain –good dog [d] is pronounced without any plosion  sudden – admit – couldn’t [d] is pronounced with nasal plosion

11 The system of English phonemes
are called consonants and vowels.

12 The difference is in different work of organs of speech.
Consonants are pronounced with noise and voice combined, In the case of consonants different obstructions are made. Vowels are pronounced with voice only. In the case of vowels no obstruction is made.
