1 Solar System Review What you need to know… HW: Quiz Friday
Two ways our models of the solar system has changed The model of our current solar system The difference between AND LOCATION OF Comets, ASTEROIDS, AND Meteoroids. HW: Quiz Friday

2 Vocabulary Ellipse: Oval shape of the planet orbits
Orbit/Revolution: To move around an object Rotation: To spin on an Axis Comet: Celestial object made of ice dust and rock that orbits the sun. Asteroids: LARGE ROCKS IN SPACE Meteoroids: broken pieces of asteroids and comets Meteor: rock that streaks across the atmosphere Meteorite: Piece of rock from space that reaches earth’s surface.

3 Difference in models We used to think… Now we know…
Everything in the solar system revolved around earth Planets and the sun revolved in little circles in big circles (corkscrew shaped) Now we know… The sun is in the center of the solar system. Our planets revolve in ellipses.

4 Our solar system starting from the sun.
My……mercury Very…..Venus Energetic…..Earth Mother…..Mars Just…..Jupiter Served….Saturn Us……Uranus Nachos…..Neptune

5 Inner Planets vs. Outer planets
Hot Small No rings Close together Revolve quickly Close to sun Cold Large Rings Far apart Revolve slowly Far from sun

6 Comets Made of Ice, gas, and dust Found beyond pluto in the oort cloud
Revolve around the sun. Has a tail and coma

7 Asteroid vs. Meteoroid both in space
Large rock or metal in space Found in the asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter. Broken piece of asteroids and comets (smaller). Found in the asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter.

8 Meteors vs meteorite Meteoroid that reaches the atmosphere.
Shooting stars Meteor that reaches earth’s surface.
