Why Work? To pay bills. To exist ??
13
Money…it is important Money, It can’t buy happiness, but it can buy ice cream, and that is about the same thing. It’s nice to have enough to take care of the essentials of life and then some. The question is, what is that amount?
14
How Much? How do you decide what is what you need?
15
Budgeting How much will your Life style cost? How much money will you have to earn? Budgeting is the art of listing everything you need or want and comparing it with what you have. To live within your means is to live without going over how much you make. Budgeting is a way to calculate what you can afford so you don’t go over what you make.
16
Why are we making a budget? We are planning. We want to see how much it is going to cost us to live the life style we desire. We then will be able to choose a path to get to our goal.
17
Our First Budget We will start small. How much does it cost to exist in Clayton County? Can we make it on minimum wage on our own?
18
First step is to Research: Rent (what is the best deal in CC) Utilities Transportation Insurance Food Expenses

How much did you calculate Bus fare? Hard to calculate without knowing where you will work. Assume you have to travel into Atlanta How much did you calculate for a cell phone?
24
Part 1: Assignment Budgeting Time to use your data to determine if you will make enough to pay all your bills.
25
Introduction to Excel Excel is used to create spreadsheets. A spreadsheet is information laid out in an organized fashion. Excel allows the introduction of formulas so once you enter the numbers, it calculates for you, saving the hassle of using a calculator or worse, your fingers and toes. We are going to use Excel to enter our data and see how much money you have left if you worked a minimum wage job. (Don’t worry, later we will figure out a career for you and see if you can do better.)
26
Part 1: Assignment: Budgeting Find the Excel Document “Monthly Budget Worksheet” and enter in your data from the Cost of Living Worksheet the appropriate cells.
27
Entering date Rent: $500 Food: $35 per week Utilities: $74 Bus Fare: $30 per week Phone Plan: $? Personal Care: $? Health Insurance:$50 per month Savings (emergency fund): $?

Today: Go to www.jhstechnology.weebly.comwww.jhstechnology.weebly.com Foundations Career Unit Open Monthly Budget Excel Document Enter the data Provided today Answer the following questions: How close did you come to making your budget? Over? Under? What could you delete to save more? What could you do to make your money go further?
29
Begin: Go quietly to your workstation. When signaled, log off your computer, clean up your workstation and return quietly to the step seating.
30
Discussion Can you make it on minimum wage? Will you be able to live like you want? What options do you think you might have if minimum wage jobs are all you can find? Do you think you might need to consider more training after college?
31
Job? I have to get a job?! The next question, are their any jobs you can do now with your present skill set that will support your budget? Before you decide on a career path you need to consider some things……
