1 Chemistry Lab Equipment

2 Accurate Measurements
These pieces of equipment provide accurate measurements when read properly.

3 How to read a graduated cylinder
Your eye line should be even with the BOTTOM of the meniscus (curved surface of a liquid).

4 How to use a triple beam balance
Always carry the balance with two hands Set all the riders to zero and remove any material from the balance pan. Calibrate the balance by turning the adjustment screw until the pointer on the end of the beam aligns with the center mark. Only solids should be placed directly on the pan. Loose solids should be placed in a weigh boat or weigh paper and liquids should be placed in a container.

5 How to use a triple beam balance
Move the largest rider along the beam one notch at a time until the pointer drops. Ten move the rider back on notch. Repeat this procedure with the next smallest rider. Continue in the same manner until you are using the smallest rider.

6 How to use a triple beam balance
The beam on which the smallest rider moves does not have any notches. Slowly slide the rider along until the pointer on the end of the beam aligns with the center mark. The mass of the object on the pan is the sum of the masses shown on the beams. E sure to subtract the mass of the container, if any.

8 Approximate Measurements
These pieces of equipment do not provide accurate measurements but can be used for approximate measurements.

13 Safety Equipment These should be worn to protect yourself from potential injuries.

15 How to use a bunsen burner
Check the rubber tubing for any cracks. Push the end of the rubber tubing onto the gas valve. Make sure the burner is level and on a flat surface and away from any flammable material. Close the air intake valve.

16 How to use the bunsen burner
Light a match and hold it against the lower side of the burner tube. Turn on the gas slowly and move the match up until the gas ignites. Adjust the flame by manipulating the air intake control a good burner flame gives off little light and has two distinct cones.

17 How to adjust the flame on a bunsen burner
If the flame is: Too large, slowly turn down the gas. Yellow and/or smoky, adjust the air intake control. Disappears down the tube, turn off the gas with the valve, decrease the air intake, and relight the burner. If there is a gap between the top of the tube and the base of the flame, slowly turn down the gas.
