11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 1 By Jorge Chau and Ronald Woodman (IGP) Donald T. Farley and Wesley E. Swartz (ECE-CU) David Hysell (EAS-CU) The Jicamarca Radio Observatory Near Lima, Peru Jicamarca in Review Swartz 03/11/7

11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 2 Jicamarca in Review, 1999-2003 The Next Five Years (DLH) An Introduction to Jicamarca (DTF) Management Overview and Changes - people (DTF) Science Highlights - ideas (DLH) Infrastructure Development - tools (JLC) Other Instruments/projects (JLC) Outreach, Education, Societal Impact (WES) Response to the Last Panel’s Report (WES/DTF) Maintenance Challenges (JLC? Or WES?) Budget Challenges (WES)

11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 3 Maintenance Challenges Lots of electronics Lots of antenna connections (corrosion) Aging vehicles But, there are really no single-point failure modes (baring some cataclysmic event) that would cause an extended down time: Multiple systems with multiple transmitters, receivers, computers, but final transmitter tubes now run about $80,000

11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 4 Budget Challenges Additional operational costs for new instruments JULIA – cost was not previously included in the main budget SOUSY – fuel expected to be $8K/yr for 500 hours of operation Bistatic – Equipment funded separately; routine operational costs Operating with 4 big transmitters – increases peak demand billing Replacement of aging vehicles Need a new one approximately every 2 years Replacement of any failure of transmitter tubes $15K for drivers (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr) $80K for finals (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr) $40K for SOUSY finals

11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 5 Broad Category Budget Breakdown The fine print: Proposed for 2004-2005: $1.5M (with wish list items)

11/20/20032003 November NSF Panel Review of JicamarcaChallenges: 6 Budget Wish List Electronic steering of main array (top priority) 128 – phase switches plus control ($120…split over 3 years) Restoration of electronic steering of SOUSY radar 4-phase selection option $30K 8-phase selection option (original) $45K Spare transmitter tubes 1.5-MW Main Transmitter Final: $80K 100-KW Main Transmitter Driver (4CX4000G): $15K 300-KW SOUSY Final: $40K Misc. Lab equipment Computers and networking equipment to stay current
