2 The Sentence In most sentences, the Subject comes first, and right after the Subject, you find the Verb. Jason walked to class.

3 Adjectives Adjectives always appear in front of the Subject and describe the Subject. Subject Verb Jason walked. Adjective An engaged Jason walked to class.

4 Adjectives describe the Subject, and Adverbs describe the Verb.
Subject Verb Jason walked to class. Jason walked Adverb slowly to class.

5 Adverbs Jason walked slowly to class. Subject Adverb Verb
Unlike Adjectives, Adverbs can come before or after the Verb, or even can be separated from the Verb! Subject Verb Adverb Jason walked slowly to class. Subject Adverb Verb Jason slowly walked to class. Adverb Subject Verb Slowly Jason walked to class.

6 Adverbs Jason walked slowly. Adverbs answer the question ‘how’.
“How did Jason walk?” “He walked slowly.” Subject Verb Adverb Jason walked slowly.

8 Introductory Words Introductory words can also come before the Subject in a Sentence. Intro Word Subject First, Matt Holliday Verb hit a home run.

9 Introductory Words However, the Rockies still lost the game.
In fact, Introductory words usually come before the Subject in a Sentence. Intro Word Subject Verb However, the Rockies still lost the game.

10 When Introductory words begin a sentence they must be followed by a comma!
Introductory Word Yesterday, Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a shutout.

11 Introductory Words Here are some common Introductory Words: Of course, For instance, Clearly, However, Nevertheless, In fact, First, second, third,… Then, Finally, For example,

12 Yesterday I had to work all night. Today I do not have to work at all.
In the following sentences, underline the Subject and put the Verb in bold. Put parentheses around the Introductory words. Add any commas that are needed. Yesterday I had to work all night. Today I do not have to work at all. However Henry is on call Second each student is graduating on time. Afterwords I’ll complete the grade.
