How to find DO, IO, OC

Action verb Shows an action, something that can be done or seen You can picture it in your head

Direct object Some, but not all, action verbs have direct objects. DO: noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. The answer to the question “what” after the verb

Indirect object Some action verbs also have indirect objects If there is an IO, there has to be a DO IO is the receiver of the DO Answers the question “to what/who” or “for what/who” after the verb

Object Complement Some action verbs that have a DO can have an OC if they don’t have an IO OC is a noun or adjective that renames or describes the DO It always comes after the DO if it’s there

4 Patterns with action verbs Subject + Verb Subject + Verb + DO S + V + IO + DO S + V + DO + OC *remember to ignore prep phrases and that helping verbs count as part of the verb phrase

Step 1 Find the verb in a sentence a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 1 Find the verb in a sentence a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 2 Read the sentence in your head. Stop after the verb, and ask “what?” a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 2 Read the sentence in your head. Stop after the verb, and ask “what?” a.Could you please explain WHAT? b.Please give WHAT? c.The girl called WHAT?

Step 2 The answer to your “what?” question is the DO a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 2 The answer to your “what?” question is the DO a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 3 Now check for an IO. Ask yourself, is anyone or anything receiving the DO? Is it for or to anyone? If the sentence already says “for” or “to,” that’s a prep phrase and can’t be an IO. a.Could you please explain to her the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 3 Now check for an IO. Ask yourself, is anyone or anything receiving the DO? Is it for or to anyone? If the sentence already says “for” or “to,” that’s a prep phrase and can’t be an IO. a.Could you please explain (to her) the directions? b.Please give me your attention. c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 4 Now check for OC. The OC is an object complement, which renames or describes the DO. A sentence cannot have an OC without a DO. Also, a sentence which has an IO cannot have a OC.

Step 4 An OC always comes after the DO. See if there’s anything that renames or describes the DO. a.Could you please explain (to her) the directions? b.Please give me your attention. (can’t have an OC because it has an IO) c.The girl called her mother mean.

Step 4 An OC always comes after the DO. See if there’s anything that renames or describes the DO. a.Could you please explain (to her) the directions? b.Please give me your attention. (can’t have an OC because it has an IO) c.The girl called her mother mean.

Summary Find verb Check for DO Check for IO (always before DO if it’s there) Check for OC in sentences with DO but no IO
