9 INNOVATIONS Expanding the nation made it necessary to make it easier to get people and information west Steamboats: Ships powered by steam, allowed for people to trade goods much easier on rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri Rivers) Telegraph: device that transfers information long distances, allowed people to transfer information across the country quicker

10 REACHING THE WEST Fact: The west was massive and hard to navigate Solution: Create internal improvements (transportation) to make this easier (American System) Erie Canal: man made water way from Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes through New York National Road: government built road from Maryland to Illinois Railroads began to sprout up and would eventually make transportation much easier

12 LIFE IN THE WEST As your character continues their travels, they find themselves in the West. Using what we discussed today, write the final diary entry, being sure to include what we discussed today and the answers to the following questions. 1.What was your reaction the first time you saw a steamboat moving down the river? 2.What method did you use to get west? (National Road, Erie Canal, or Railroads) 3.How is life in the West than the other regions you have visited?
