5 5 5 Overview of Mobile for Today’s Session How do we define mobile? – “The Mobile Web refers to the use of Internet-connected applications, or browser-based access to the Internet from a mobile device - such as a smartphone or tablet PC - connected to a wireless network”... from Wikipedia – Two major distinctions: – Mobile website – Website created specifically for mobile devices; accessible through mobile browsers, no download or installation required – Mobile app - Application designed to run on a specific mobile device; download and installation required

6 6 6 Overview of Mobile for Today’s Session Mobile Website vs. Mobile App Feature Portability Findability Distribution User Experience Performance Mobile Website Not device or browser specific; but variations will occur Search engines, links, as with any web site Available to anyone on web Depends on device, browser, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript Depends on device, browser, and design Mobile App Needs to be developed or ported to each platform Searchable thru various app stores, more difficult than web Depends on app store policy and approvals Designer/developer has full control over interface High performance thru app code that runs on device

7 7 7 Overview of Mobile for Today’s Session What Characterizes the Mobile Web? – It’s mobile – Geo-location, user is moving, may be important – Dynamic, unpredictable locations (often noisy) – Speeds are typically slower, power less than desktop – Tasks are focused, few, frequent, short, and immediate – Devices are in flux and different – Multiple display sizes and capabilities – Varying levels of support or non-support for software, plug-ins – Interoperability and usability problems – Fragmentation of devices, operating systems, and browsers – Display size, input options, multitasking
