2 The ‘Jimbelung Games’ - Journey Begins Formation of GOLDOC’s Elders Advisory Group and Indigenous Working Group. Endorsement received to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for GC2018. The intent to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan for GC2018 was launched as part of the launch of National Reconciliation Week on 27 May 2015. The GC2018 Reconciliation Action Plan will be the first of its kind delivered by a major event in Australia and in Commonwealth Games history.

4 GC2018 RAP Opportunities GC2018 provides a significant opportunity to: recognise Indigenous culture and respect the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Yugambeh Language Group People of the Gold Coast and Traditional Custodians of the cities of Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville where GC2018 events will be held celebrate the extensive Indigenous heritage and culture of the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia leverage economic and social benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

5 Reconciliation Australia Planning and development with Reconciliation Australia (RA). The GC2018 RAP will take the form of an “Elevate” RAP - first of its kind for a major event and unique to other RAP’s. Workshop with Reconciliation Australia held with Indigenous Working Group members, senior management across GOLDOC divisions and the Office of Commonwealth Games Delivery. Outcomes from the Workshop form the basis of the GOLDOC’s RAP initiatives. Upcoming – A secondary workshop to be held on 13 November 2015 with RA.

6 Visions for Reconciliation – RAP Workshop Outcomes Global – Other Indigenous groups will compete at these games Respect – For Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples Excellence – Opportunity for GOLDOC to lead Accountable – To the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community Trust – Between GOLDOC and the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community Equality – Level playing field. Pride – A. all aspects of the Games immerse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. B. Weave Indigenous cultures though our activities. Legacy – A. At the end of the Games Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities proud of this. B. Our RAP a blueprint for after Commonwealth Games and major events. Celebrate Indigenous Culture

7 Communication, Community and Cultural Awareness GC2018 RAP communications in internal (GOLDOC team) and external newsletters (gc2018 subscribers) - database in excess of 35,000. Weaving the Yugambeh language into communications - cultural awareness sessions will be a key platform. Initiatives incorporated into our staff induction program – essential given the rapid growth rate of GOLDOC team - doubling each year leading up to April 2018. Community Consultation the Yugambeh Museum - local community consultation in relation to GC2018 across the Gold Coast. Upcoming - Cultural Awareness Sessions (Banaam) for all GOLDOC staff - December 2015.

8 Major Announcements / Events Welcome / Acknowledgement to Country embedded into GOLDOC protocol; – Major sponsor announcements (eg. Echo entertainment - Jupiter’s Casino) – Key GC2018 milestone events eg. GHQ opening, ‘years to Go’ celebrations – Elders Advisory Group members – Welcome to Country. Engagement activities and celebration of NAIDOC week and National Reconciliation Week. Budget approved and early concepts. GOLDOC participation at key community events.

10 Office facility initiatives Acknowledging the Yugambeh Language Group People of the Gold Coast on all GOLDOC email signatures – 1,000 plus staff by Games Time. Renaming of the GOLDOC Board Room to the Yugambeh Room. Chern’ee Sutton’s Artwork, Ajarku Muruu, which in the language of the Chern’ee’s Kalkadoon people means All One Country positioned in the GOLDOC lobby. Upcoming - Tindale map to be prominently positioned within the GOLDOC offices. Proposed– Recognition of the “Jimbelung” Games within the office fit-out

11 Procurement and Workforce Procurement – Supply Nation membership. – Incorporation of Indigenous content in policy, EOI’s, tender documentation. – GC2018 Forward Procurement schedule. Exploring workforce and recruitment opportunities – Recent partnership with Griffith University - intern programs. Forward recruitment planning with Workforce Functional Area. – Representation on key committees and the development of key programs eg. Volunteers advisory committee. – Engagement activities as part of GOLDOC’s Engagement Strategy. eg. Indigenous Games, team building.

12 Next Steps Upcoming Reconciliation Action Plan Workshop – (smaller scale) with Reconciliation Australia – 13 November 2015. Ongoing meetings with GOLDOC functional areas to progress opportunities. GOLDOC draft RAP initiatives paper to be provided for consideration to the Indigenous Working Group. Draft RAP in development. Fully endorsed RAP by mid-2016.
