MARS IS THE MOST EARTHLIKE OF LL THE PLANETS. A VISTOR WOULD FIND THAT A DAY ON MARS IS LONGER THAN ONE ON EARTH. MARS IS ALSO TILTED THE SAME AMOUNT AS EARTH, SO IT HAS SEASONS. MARS HAS THIN POLAR CAPS, THEY GROW QUICKLY IN THE WINTER AND BASICALLY DISSAPEAR IN THE SUMMER THEY CONTAIN FROZEN CARBON. MARS INTRO.

 AVERAGE DISTANCE OF ABOUT 228 MILLION KILOMETERS FROM THE SUN  50% FARTHER FROM THE SUN, ITS ORBITAL PERIOD IS 687 DAYS, AND IT ROTATES ON ITS AXIS EVERY 24H 37MIN  TILTS NEARLY THE SAME ANGLE EARTH DOES MARS SEASONS ARE MUCH LIKE EARTHS SEASONS, MARS HAS BEEN GEOLOGICALLLY ACTIVE IN ITS PAST  A SYSTEM OF DEEP CAYONS ALSO COVERS PART OF THE SURFACE, VALLES MARINERIS IS A SERIS OF CANYONS ON MARS THAT IS THOUGHT TO BE A CRACK THAT FORMED IN THE CRUST AS THE PLANET COOLED.  LATER ERODED BY WATER CONTD. INFO.

 THARS MONTES IS ONE OF SEVERAL REGIONS ON MARS  VOLCANOES IN THIS REGION ARE 100 TIMES AS LARGE AS EARTHS LARGEST VOLCANOE  OLYMPUS MONS IS 3 TIMES AS TALL AS MOUNT EVEREST  Its base would completely cover a state like Colorado or Arizona.  Olympus Mons is a shield volcano formed by repeated lava flows similar to the volcanic events that formed the Hawaiian Islands. There is no evidence of any explosive eruptions akin to that of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. MARTIAN VOLCANOES

 Mars might appear dry as a desert, but astronauts may someday be able to tap its soil to quench their thirst. Research recently published suggests that the soil from the Martian surface contains about 2% water by weight.  This is one of several insights emerging from data that the Mars rover Curiosity has been collecting. Five studies in the journal Science were published last week based on data from the rover's first 100 days on the Red Planet.  'Based on measurements of humidity and the temperature at a height of 1.6 meters and at the surface of the planet, we can estimate the amount of water that is absorbed.  'When night falls, some of the water vapor in the atmosphere condenses on the planet surface as frost, but calcium perchlorate is very absorbent and it forms a brine with the water, so the freezing point is lowered and the frost can turn into a liquid. WATER ON MARS!?!?

 SCIENTIST THINK THAT OTHER FEATURES ON MARS MIGHT BE EVIDENCE OF VAST BLOOD PLAINS PRODUCED BY A VOLUME OF WATER EQUAL TO THAT OF ALL FIVE OF THE EARTHS GREAT LAKES. CONTD. WATER ON MARS
