Introduction to Physical Science
Vocabulary Write the following words in your glossary as we discuss them in class. You’re welcome!
2
Experiment An experiment is an organized procedure for testing a hypothesis.
3
Responding ( Dependent ) Variable
The responding variable is the factor whose value changes because of a change in the independent or manipulated variable. The variable that is observed due to a change in the experiment. A measurable outcome of an experiment.
4
Manipulated ( Independent ) Variable
The manipulated variable is the factor that is adjusted by the experimenter. The variable that is purposefully changed in order to test a hypothesis. There are typically two or three different changes you make to the experiment.
5
Controlled Variable The factor that does not change in the experiment. Parameters that remain constant for ALL trials of an experiment.
6
Control Group A standard of comparison needed to draw a meaningful conclusion. A test group that remains constant throughout the experiment to serve as a baseline or comparative factor.
7
Repeated Trials Multiple experiments using the same procedures to ensure accuracy of the collected data. Scientist repeat their experiments multiple times to make sure that their outcome is legitimate and not just a fluke.
8
Hypothesis A testable prediction for the outcome of the experiment. Made before the experiment is conducted and based on scientific knowledge. If… then… because…
9
Procedure The sequence of instructions to be followed before and during the experimentation process. Must be precise and easy to follow/understand.
10
Trial The act of testing an experiment for observations and data collection.
11
Data Evidence Information as observed or measured in result of conducting an experiment. A measurable result of an experiment.
